i ship with both kinds
Some people have complaints of their ears touching the drivers because stock pleathers are a bit too shallow, so the hard foam rings are a hack that Hifiman did to resolve that issue. If you have ear-touching-drivers issues then the back-vents mod should be sufficient to resolve it, without messing up the sound.
Np. I answered that here actually: http://www.head-fi.org/t/619447/hifiman-he400-he500-re-grilling-mod-56k-dial-up-users-beware/90#post_9249483
Thanks. I should have them tomorrow and wanted to make sure it wasn't too difficult to get the J$ money pads on. How do the J$ pads compare to the Jergpad mod?
Haven't been following this thread as well as I should have, but did anyone mention this yet? http://btg-audio.com/webstore.htm#!/~/product/category=2609209&id=20207679
I know some have DIYed it, but for those who should not ever touch a soldering joint this is a godsend. This + Jergpads + headband +grill mod = end of my HE-400 journey.
Yes I know, but they were "playing" with my money and I told them to buy from Justin....I was a bit mad, but I'm fine by now...
Anyway I'm very happy with the HE-400. They are surprisingly comfortable for me. I was wearing them all day (almost literally) the other day and I had absolutely no problem with them.
I like the sound with the pleathers. I was bit afraid of sibilance and tizz, but even though its there, it doesn't bother me. Sibilance on my Fidelio X1 was much more pronounced, but I still don't know it was faulty or not.
So, now I'm hunting for a better amp and a dac. I was looking at the M&M stack but it would be twice as much when it gets here. I think I'll buy something locally.
I'm planning to do the Jergpad mod soon and might be ordering the velour pads...but I might just end up buying some velour material for it.
