LCD 2 basically = HE-400 bass with HD650 warmth, mids, and treble. It's the closest hybrid of those two if I've ever heard one. I was assured the LCD2 with vegan pads sound basically the same, hopefully. It's the LCD3 that seems to be negatively impacted with vegan pads.

I'll probably go the opposite direction.  I think I'll be getting an HE-6 with speaker amp instead, unless Audeze releases a closed back LCD2 sometime soon.

It's too bad Headamp doesn't have HE-6 for demo because I'd totally buy an Emotiva Mini and sign up for that HE-6.

Isn't that what their latest prototype was? A closed back LCD2.

As for HE-6.... I would, but I want that LCD2 smoothness. No more bright headphones for me.

I'm not sure if it's even a prototype, I thought it was a mere proof of concept.

Why not try the Mad Dogs? I heard that is as close to an LCD2 in isolating form if anything. I was one click away from placing an order, but I don't need a closed headphone, and not sure the bass will compare to that LCD2 bass...

I don't really want a side-grade to the HE-400, seeing as how views on HE-400 vs mad-dogs are split. At least I know the HE-6 will deliver the same Hifiman bass.

The sound signature of the two are different enough that that two are complimentary. The Mad-dogs are just smooth (if I had to pick a word to describe them), the music sounds as it should, bass when needed, mids when needed, and smooth highs. I regret selling mine everyday (they help to fund the Lcd-2 purchase), they were a great kick-back and enjoy the music HP.

I was going to re-buy them and saw a set of W1000X's on here for a decent price, they have not left my head since, they are unique sounding enough that they put some excitement into my music collection.

So to call them a side-grade is accurate, but they are different enough to own both.

I was never a believer in 'complimentaries.'  I'll always only have one headphone I use with an AD700 to fall-back on during rare occasions for whatever reason.

Same here, I would hate having to decide on which headphone I feel like listening to based on my music mood. I just want one can that's a great all rounder like the HE-400 is. And perhaps in the future upgrade to an HE-500 or 6 with speaker amp, or whatever Hifiman has coming up and call it a day. Im in love with the Hifiman house sound.

Thinking about getting a HE-400 but kind of concerned about build quality, especially with their just being a one year warranty. It seems like there are fairly frequent problems with the wire. Does that seem to be the consensus? Compared to the HDxxx line, which you hardly ever hear about a problem, do you all feel like that you will get a bang for your buck in the long run or do you expect these to only last a couple years? Thanks for any advice!

This is the best cable I've experienced in a headphone yet.  No problems whatsoever, especially not with the connections.

Pretty sure the warranty is extended these days. I actually think the wire is my only complaint with the build quality of these headphones.

+1 for the HE-6.

I dont perceive the HE-6 as bright headphone per se. Definitely not with any kind of music I  have heard so far (expect for my very special songs evil_smiley.gif)

However, compared to LCD2s almost every HP could be considered bright :)

No rumbly sub-bass to be found here.... Tight across.
