The in your face qualities of the he-400 are pretty much completely dependent on the pads (they will still be dynamic sounding though).
The jerg pads make the HE-400 sound much more balanced and full.
However, the HE-500 probably has more potential, but like you said you'll need a better amp...
Have you ever heard the lcd2/lcd3? I would really like to compare the fully modded he-400 with the lcd2 :)
I never heard the he400 with the jerg pads..so i dont know how they sound..but i do know for me the standard he400 was not for me..i hadthem for 4 months and sold them to buy the he500 in november last year and never looked back when i by accident stumbled uponmaybe the most underappreciated and unknown amp ever..the 337 i have now..that thing makes my he500 sing!!!! I wont be selling those two soon i think... Tubes that i have are the best i could find sonically..i only need to upgrade the inside of the amp (caps internal wiring) and try the jerg mod myself..and then..heaven..
i listened to the lcd 2 rev 2 for an hour or so..I found him much darker then the he500 but the bass was much much better! They are two different kind of phones..one love one others the other..both are great phones..but then again..the lcd2 didnt sound to good on my amp..so once again..for both amps u have a golden rule..if u want the best out of any of the two..find the right amp for them..i did like the lcd on the violectric v200.. Maybe because that amp is a bit leaner and therefore pairs better with the darker lcd? Who knows..but if i had a lcd2 rev 2 i would certainly buy the violectric v200 for it..imho ofcourse.

If your bored one day, PM me the tubes you use. My DV is a beautiful amp that reminds me of Batman, I would like to mess around with it when I get some time.

I ended up saying screw it and bought the Brainwavz stand because Amazon had it for $15 less than MP4 Nation's site. It fits the HE-400 very well and I don't feel like the headband is being stretched at all. Here's a couple pictures.
Also pictured: Shure SRH750 DJ, Creative T40 Series II Speakers, Larry and His Flask ... Flask, HE-400 on Peridot stand, Tetris NES cartridge clock and Creative Aurvana Live! headphones. Also, Cthulhu in the middle, protecting my HE-400. He's very tiny but packs a punch.
Closer:
I have just received my stand this morning!
Do you always use your HE-400 with the band adjusted as in the pictures? Looks like you have enough clearance for the cable.
I need to extend mine down quite a way and when placed on this stand the cable has a very tight turn since they extend so far down.
I do not think this stand is big enough for my HE-400 as it could be applying to much stress to the cable. I'm not going to adjust it up and down each time I use them.

I purchased an e17 as the amp... over otheroptions... I was disappointed that even at max volume (60) it was really quiet... it was almost only up to e7's volume at 25 setting... is this the way e17 is...? thanks... if it is I might be looking to buy an e9 for volume purposes... I thought e17's would drive the he 400 well... it sounds nice but the volume feels under powered...

Sorry, gents. There are just sometimes when this thread takes on a bit too much seriousness. So, a little humor is always good - sort of a way to let us know that we're just human and this should be a fun hobby - not one that should cause tension.

I use my HE-400 with the band the opposite - all the way extended to fit my large head. I adjust it back to this and coil my cable up when I have it on the stand.

Hmm, I could do that. PITA having to keep changing it though.
Wonder if the constant adjusting would wear them out?

Its funny cus i mostly dislike the signature of the HE-400, but overall its such a huge upgrade over my senn HD 380 Pro that its still better than anything i ever hear.
I will be auditioning (testing i guess this means) the HE-500, Beyerdynamic T1 and HD600 for a more neutral headphone (i guess im starting to understand why people like neutral headphones), and probably keep the HE-400 for gaming and get some higher class (or simply better signature) for music.
Normally id be angry that i bought something that is not exactly waht i expected it to be, but in this case they cover enought of my needs that its convinced me to get a powerfull amp in the near future (3-4 months time).
Neutral=LFF Paradox, look no further.

How much of a difference would the Schiit Modi&Magni make compared to a FiiO E17? Is it true that a better amp can reveal more, make the soundstage larger, and increase sound quality?
Right now the E17 is pretty good, so I'm wondering if anyone has a comparison or thoughts on this matter.

I firmly believe the E17 gets around 87% of the HE-400. If I hadn't heard another amp, I would have been perfectly fine with the E17. But I do think the Magni brings out more of the headphones. They don't require more power, but they love more power. They're more revealing, it's not as muddy or lethargic sounding, in my opinion.

I disagree. Im pretty sure it maxes at around 84.75%

That's just an opinion. Just one. The Fostex variants have a lot of followings, but the Paradox also falls just slightly under a pair of used HE-500s, when it comes to price.
