I think my he400 sounds good straight out of my ipad. 

that being said, amping does make a difference.  stronger bass, more dynamics, better separation.    how much it improves the sound depends on your expectations going in. 

If I were you I would sell those other headphones, keep the he400 and buy either a fiio or o2/odac. 

or since you think it sounds great out of your phone, do yourself a favor and stop now.  dont buy anything

I have a Note 2. Rooted but stock everything. The volume I get straight out of the Note 2 to the HE-400s is fine but not very loud by any means (volume maxed out). Also, as I said previously, compared to the 558s and DT 990 Pros I've tried out of my A/V receiver, the HE-400s seem to require a lot more mmmphhh. In other words, they don't seem as efficient as they're made out to be or at least compared to the HD-558s and 250ohm 990s. I haven't auditioned anything else.

I went ahead and placed an order for the Asgard. Back-ordered. In the meantime, I'll continue to try out the E17.

Running stock is not too bad, the reason i like a custom kernel was that the app gave me control of the volume output in decibels, it allowed me to amp it up about 8 or 9 decibels total. Basically to the hardware limit. So that might be the reason i get pleasent volumes out of it.

Hey - Matt - are your sinuses plugged up?  Our weather here in the hartland is nuts.  60' one day 25' the next and 60' again the day after. My nose it gobed up with crap and when that happens my eustachian tubes get plugged and my ears do wierd things. If so, pop some sudafed and afrin spray and see how it goes.  Might have some fluid backed up in there.

Long time fan - got around to listen to a few Primus tracks (most notably The Antipop, Pudding Time, My Name Is Mud) ...and melting.  The percussion sounds insanely impressive on every track, not to mention Les Claypool's bass as expected.  Most of my free time the past week has been trying albums out.  Basically I reached "P" in my library tonight haha... HE-400 is serious commitment, not for the faint of heart

I will shamelessly agree.  My Funk/Electro Funk collection has been enjoyable so far as well...Planet Rock anyone?

Hifiman's next revision to their headphones should really include a change to the way the pads mount to the headphones. I know it's already been changed slightly once but these cheap plastic clips are pretty shameful on a $400 pair of headphones. One of the clips already bent on the pleather pads and that side popped out. I hadn't even tried swapping pads yet and I have no idea how it bent itself. There has to be a better way to do this.
