Thanks for the info.

Does anybody know when the latest revision was introduced?

3-4 revisions in the first year sounds a bit scary to me. Should one expect more revisions of HE-400 in the near future?

There's only really been 2 real revisions. The first one was the black driver which had a really dark sound, and some build issues. The second revision had the white housing and fixed most build issues. This is the one you want. The third revision was faulty and called back by Hifiman, so they went back to the second rev (or fourth if that's what you prefer to call it).

Don't expect any more revisions, the current rev is perfect.

You won't find anything retail that is not the latest version. Possibly there might be some used models that could be the r3 non preferred. The preferred are colored white/opaque. While the evil r3 are light sandy brown.

That's what I thought. Most, if not all resellers must have the latest revision. Unless, of course, you get a used one, as Matt said.

Matt

That's all good news:)

HE-400 is being sold with faux-leather pads, but there seem to be a consensus that the headphone with valour pads sounds better. Is this correct? Is buying the valour pads a must if one wants to achieve the best sound out of HE-400?

I would say yes ^^...the general consensus is that the velours are preferred. Jerg offers a pad mod that seems to improve the sound even more.

My J$ pads came in today!

Have barely had any time with them so far, but I am liking them. Changes the way these headphones feel on your head quite a bit, in a good way.

I'm gonna need to find some good adhesive for putting the screen from the pleathers in them though... I figure I could just tuck it under them but that isn't working that great.

Hey - I ordered mine weekend before last and they shipped on the 15th, and I got them today. They shipped from Toronto so it took a week to get here to NC. So hopefully yours will be coming soon as well.

Got the HE-400s in from Justin.  I guess I'm the first to receive them on the loaner program.  Although I never owned the HE-400s. I used them on loan from a friend before for a few days.

My goodness, I forgot how thick these sound.  The bass and mids are thick, treble has "ENERGY" while not being piercing .  I put the 4-pin XLR Hifiman cable on them to use with my Balanced B22 and a pair of stock Denon pads.

Hell the HE-500s seem like their more sensitive than these are.  I suspect these are brand new.  So I'll let them play for a while.  Just so nobody will through that in my face "you didn't let them burn in"

I think Justin burns them in now anyway.

Took me 2 months to fully understand these HP.

Fo the price, assuming you can put up to the discomfort of the weight, there are the best HP i have heard (i hope i will never hear something better or ill have to be sorry about my wallet).

You and me both. When I first got these I felt like I was missing something or I wasn't too sure about their sound sig. I have about 60-75 hours on them now and everything else I hear sounds horrible in comparison. Tomorrow I get to pick up my M&M stack and finally will be capable of EQ'ing it a bit more to what I like. Even my girlfriend stole these away from me for a few hours and she is far from a head-fi'er.

Thanks everyone.. it looks like many US folks are getting their deliveries today.. good to hear.  I'll be checking the mail shortly to see if mine arrived, too.

Best sound stock is with the J-money (J$) beyerdynamic custom lambskin leather pads, unless you are willing to get your hands dirty and do some intensive modding on your Hifiman faux leather pads a la my guide (The "Jergpad" mod, linked in my signature). IMO if done properly the Jergpads sound nicer and complement the sound signature of HE400 more, than any other earpads (stock pleather, velour, J$).

Thanks merkil! I'll check on that. I'm also interested on pictures of your HE-400 with the new pads!

Here are a few pics of my J$ Beyer pads.
