Not fair, I ordered before you! Thanks for posting a pic, looks good.
Though I went with mp4nation and paid more, Amazon won't ship it to Australia.
Mine left Hong Kong yesterday so should be here soon.

Amazon Prime is the best thing ever.
Can you guys who have the J$ take comparison shots with either the HFM velours/pleathers ?
i wanna see how tall these are.
Stay tuned guys, I formulated this mod for the HFM pleathers that were intended to maximize HE500's sound quality, but inadvertently they are ridiculously great with HE400s too. I'm very certain better than any other pads I've tried (stock pleathers, stock velours, vintage velours, J$'s). I'm in the process writing some detailed addendum impressions here in this thread I made:

Hint: female vocals are actually great now.
The earpad mod guide thread is now updated with HE400 stuff.
Listening to some female vocal music on the HE400s+modded pads right now with a huge grin, first pair of HE400s in the world that rendered female vocals so well, hah.

Nice work jerg. I had my doubts (no offense) with the grill-mod but you were so right about the resonance of the metal Hifiman uses. I am definitely trying this!
Btw your sketch is Da Vinci-like.
I hate that I have to write that guide with very contained excitement, because I don't want it to sound like too much of a hyperbole. There is no hyperbole, this mod just propels HE500 and especially HE400 to new levels.
MLE,
I've also got a Galaxy Note 2 and have a 64GB card installed to store a few FLAC files. We seem to have similar tastes in gear - I see that you've got the Compass 2 to drive your HE-400.
Been thinking on how it would be possible to use the Galaxy Note 2 (or any Android phone for the matter) as a bit perfect transport to the Compass 2 which is going to drive the HE-400
.
There should be a way to do this - just haven't figured it out yet.
If somebody know, please let me.
Steve

A USB OTG cable would be your only option:

As to weather it outputs bit perfect, that is up for debate.
Welcome to Pad-Fi, sorry about your pads.
I remain skeptical of any night and day difference but I happen to have extra pleathers so I'll have to give it a shot tomorrow.
I haven't read the whole thing yet - does your finished mod include the dust screen good sir?
It's a night-and-day difference, soundstage, tonality, openness, details, everything gets better by a big stretch.
No I opted not to include the dust screen with my version, because again, I feel it detracts from detail.
Really the mod is 3 things compounded into 1: the damping holes, the removal of dust screen, and the removal of the rubber flaps. All of them contribute. The real kicker is the damping holes though, they clean up the sound so much, but do not sacrifice the romantic weighty tonal balance of the pleathers.

I believe in your improvements for sure, but every one if us on this site loves to claim night and day! That being said, I totally hope my skepticism is misplaced, though I've never had problems with female vocals. Hoping it works out!
My finished product will have some kind of dust screen though. Not willing to jeopardize the headphones for a pad mod!

Oh I understand your caution and skepticism totally.
Here's how you could test it out; find a few tracks in your library that you know HE400 doesn't render too well (usually vocal or classic rock etc), do the mod, and see how the sound change helps.
I had the advantage of having 2 pairs of identical pleathers to compare directly, with one modded and one stock. Well, they are both modded now
Jerg, that mod looks really promising but Im scared of trying it. Is the mounting ring glued onto the pads, so I'll need to rip it off? Same for the dust screen?
