**Hifiman HE-400 Impressions and Discussion Thread** - Page 1287

Plenty of power, tiny footprint, looks decently built. Sound is the warm side of neutral. Powers the HE-400 to a level too loud for me to listen with no detectable distortion. Quality improvement of the HE-400 is sadly not there. However, it does seem to improve the X2. Gets them to open up. Better details, tightens the bass, mids still as stellar as always. Similar to my JDS Labs cMoy but with TONS more power (even on low gain) but with less warmth which the X2 doesn't really need additional warmth from an amp anyways. So the amp is a winner I think but the HE-400 is not. I'll listen to some more stuff with them to get a better idea but at this point I'm 99.9% sure the HE-400 is going back and the X2's have found a new home.

Wow,I didn't expect that. It sounds like the HE-400 just isn't for you. I think I'm leaning towards the X2 as well,I really can't decide which I like better in terms of sound, so I'm basing it on looks at this point.

BTW, I received my replacement Fulla and I've been comparing it to my SMSL SD793 II that I received last week. I think I've found a new budget amp/dac. This thing has loads more power and much better detail than the fulla. Night and day really with the HE-400s.

Yeah, after everything...the HE-400 is a great set of headphones. No doubt about that. If that V type sound signature is your cup of tea, these things are fantastic. But for my ears, I just can't not have those mids. I'll take recessed bass and recessed highs as long as I have my mids. For me, that's the heart of the music that I listen to. Luckily with the X2's the bass is there in spades, the mids are forward and perfect and the treble is recessed enough to keep them from getting bright but there's enough to bring in plenty of detail. Better sound stage and looks don't hurt either.

I'm waiting for my schiit to come in before I pass final judgment on my 400s.

Looking forward to your thoughts, especially with the X2's. I want to see if the gains I heard are real or just in my mind.

Just to reiterate, I would definitel have sent my HE400 back if I had to use the pleather pads - they really sounded not good to my ears.  As the HE400 sounds now, I'll never get rid and I also own the HE560.  Sorry to repeat what I've already said..

While I agree with this, I still don't think the mids of the HE400 will ever beat the X2, which is what A&H is looking for.

You might be right, but I still think it would be a real shame for him not to hear them with velours or focuspads.  Pad choice is make or break for A LOT of HE400 users.  Also, those planars have a uniquely vivid and textural timbral quality with a very exciting, fast, dynamic, engaging and ultimately engrossing presentation that many headphones just cannot match.  IMO, of course

I have HE400 on lease now and was able to compare them to Philips x2 and Shure 1840. I still remember sound of my Denon 7100 and HD650. To be completely honest HE400 is the worst sounding headphone of all these I mentioned. My system is rather transparent and can be modified to my tastes but I think there is nothing to be done with HE400. The lack of midrange is strange, unnatural and sounds very awkward to my tastes. I ve tied to change output impedance ( 60-100-220 ), socket output cable inside to DNM Reson ( witch cut some treble and pushed mids but only slightly )

I do agree they sound airy and so so easy but comon! at what 'price' ! to sacrifice the midrange that much!? No, never. They are in the box waiting to be sent back.

My modified ( by me ) Sansui A101 can drive any headphones so definitely there is no lack of power. Im using Headroom DAC witch is transparent enough and Van Den Hull C5 cable.

Oh

I have 2 set of pads, velour and leather, both sound sh...te plus velour are itchy! wtf ?

Agreed. I love 'em.

Since I live so close to A&H, I would be willing to ship him a pair of velours for testing purposes if he would ship 'em back.

That's awesome of you but I think I'm just going to call it. I only have until the 5th to return them anyways so I'm contacting Head-Direct today to get the return process started. I appreciate the offer though.
