The main issue with the Schiit gear, IMO, is the fixed Gain (5x). That's too much for a lot of listening scenarios. While it should be great for less-efficient headphones, you'll need to cut source volume to use it with more efficient phones and common music. Anyway, the extra power will be great if you end up going with some power-hungry orthos or high impedance phones in the future. But for most low-impedance phones, its likely a bit of overkill sorta like the O2.

I was interested in the Schiit until I realized that the O2/ODAC wins with its selectable gain, 3.5mm jacks (instead of RCAs), and stellar sound quality was overall a better fit for my typical listening needs.

Can anyone who has heard the Fiio E12 comment on how they sound with these headphones? Especially compared to vali or O2. Do these two sound like a lot better or just a little for someone who probably doesn't have the "audiophile" ear?

I don't have Vali or O2, but E12 sounds great with HE-400.

I'm just a bit sad that it's hideous and someone had a brainfart and set the power plug on the front. A Magni/Vali/Asgard/Lyr + Modi/Bifrost stack would've looked great on the table...

I might not be in the minority but I did not like the aesthetic of the modi/vali. The o2+odac is much nicer to me! looking and sounding. But the bigger schiits look hot. Except I'll need a bigger desktop space.

Curious... is or has anyone powered their HE-400 with a transformer coupled tube amp (non-OTL if you will)?  What are/were the results?

thanks

If I connect my iPod/iPad to the schiit magni amp via headphone jack to RCA input, will the sound be ok. I don't have a laptop at the moment so I won't be able to use a USB dac till the end of the month when I get it back.

it'll sound great, the ipod has a pretty good DAC.  make sure to not use the ipod EQ though, it's famously horrible and affects the entire FR with every change (there were measurements posted somewhere)

Yeah, you'd hear some improvement over the stock headphone jack. I'd suggest experimenting with different volumes on the iPod/iPad.

Hey you're welcome!!  You're talking about Little Wing right?  Short answer, Nope.  Long answer,  Hendrix wrote that song, Stevie Ray put his signature flair on it the way ONLY he can.  There's simply NO WAY to out-do that... I don't think.  You might want to look into Steve Morse, You tube him... he might have a tune or two in his library that come close.

Anyways, thanks for the warm re-welcome.  I'm still an avid headphone music listener.  I'm just more of a HF lurker now than before.  Fast forward today, I'm itching to try an HE-400 in my setup and am looking for user impressions with output transformer coupled tube amps.  Like the Mad Ear+ for example.

I decided to use this desktop file organizer instead of a trash can so that my grills would come out flat instead of curved.

As you can see, each panel is easily big enough to make cuts for both grills. For this step I used a dremel with a #409 cutoff wheel. Then to smooth out the edges and remove the burrs I used a 1"/30" belt sander.

The process took a little over an hour. My friend and I made four grills since we each own a pair.

Here is the final result.  I still have 4 panels left from the desktop organizer, enough to make 8 grills. If someone is interested in duplicating this and would like to pay shipping and handling I would be more than happy to mail you an uncut panel.

Great job on these; I remember when I first did it I just used a pair of wiresnips, the edges are deadly sharp even to this day. The good thing is the tolerances for how even the edges are is fairly lax.

Hello everyone,

as of today I too am an owner of these headphones.

I have used them for only 1 hour (before leaving for work) and I am impressed with the sound, however I have an issue.

I hear some sort of background cracking/popping. It's not very noticeable and I don't hear it all the time. Also it doesn't seem to be bass distortion, I've listened to a subwoofer test track and it sounded clean and controlled at any (reasonable) volume level.

Could this be caused by the cables? I screwed them in nicely and they feel very secure but honestly.. these feel like the shabbiest cables I've ever handled.

The cables have a way of unscrewing themselves from time to time, so my first suggestion would be to double-check the connections. Otherwise, that sounds like an issue with your source or amp, or possible the music files themselves. Do you hear it at the same points in the same songs? Do you still hear it if you plug the headphones into a completely different device?
