Right now, I'm going to be running it from my Xonar DG. It has an amp, but I realize it won't be ideal. Still looking around at options for amp (and possibly DAC if I think I need).

you could try and O2 Amp.Dac combo. Many users here on head fi sell them for about $200 or so used, some times less!

I think the NFB15.32 DAC/amp might be a better choice than the ODAC/O2 amp setup for HE400; the 15.32 has a lot more output power, and its DAC is warmer-sounding apparently. The pricings are comparable.

What about Schiit Modi/Magni, Little Dota MK1+, or Fiio E17/E09?

A Modi and LD mk 1+ would sound pretty sexy, those tube mids with all that bass... the tube should help with the highs too

The Fiio E17 sounds fine on it's own with the HE400's, the Modi/Magni sounds great as well (I'm probably getting this soon)

I'd give them a spin with the Xonar first though to see what you think. Sound is very subjective and people like different things, the sound with the Xonar might suit you just fine.

Don't look to change components for the heck of it. There's always something to upgrade in the world of headphones, you have all the time in the world.

PS: These will be an enormous upgrade over the M50's (I own the M50's and the HE400's). The HE400's do everything better from lows to mids to highs, it's a much more detailed and engaging sound then with M50's.

Aune T1 also sounds great with them. But haven't tried them with anything else yet although Burson HA-160DS is coming.

Dude is the Aune T1 a Tube dac and amp? I think a Tube Dac and a Solid State Amp would be a neat combo!

Aune T1 has a Tube DAC and a Solid State AMP. I like the combo but can't compare to anything else yet.

I'd keep it then, Tubes should sound nice with the HE 400, get some clear tops or other treble focused tubes, and you'd get a little more upper mids and a smoother treble imo

Can CIEMs rival the SQ of the he 400? I'd like to save up for a pair bc portability and plugging into my iphone as well as isolation are VERY attractive to me.

Separation and the bass of the 400 is what is most appealing to me.

My R-50 with custom-tips (CIEMs) are on another level in terms of isolation, usable everywhere including planes or subways. I am pretty disappointed with the HE-400 in this respect, as the only place where I can use them comfortably is at home. Perhaps at work, but you better have your own room and not work in open space. Generally, not only you hear almost every noise but also your environment can hear your songs pretty clearly. But this is expected, as these are open cans and thus nothing really to complain about.

My real disappointment so far is clarity and transparence, but I should not reach final conclusions yet as my HE-400 has only 60 hours of burn-in. So I'm waiting and hoping for an improvement.. Thus far bass is powerful, imaging and soundstage are great, but the clarity is not (yet?) on par with IEMs.

I've been thinking that my headhone amp is not powerful enough, but its WM1811 from Wolfson, "5.3mW total power for DAC playback to headphones". With unblocked volume I can only go as high as 20-30% without pain. So it seems powerful enough.

HE-400 has super clarity, but it can sound muffled at first if you're not used to the withdrawn upper midrange.

On another note, I finally figured out why I don't like the RE-400 as much as I could.  It has too much midrange in the 1-2khz area.  Too much to be neutral there-- makes it sound tinny.  The bass is good for quiet environments, but in noisy environments it loses the bass and has less bass than neutral.

Cannot really compare IEM with full size headphones because they are completely different.

I use the fiio e17 as a DAC. What would a better DAC do to the 400?
