I'm pretty sure some have already tried them, they said that they were a bit hard to fit on Hifiman headphones because of the difference in size and that the sound isn't worth the premium considering the HE-400 isn't supposed to be high end in terms of cost anyways.

True enough, still what did the J$ pads cost? either way I'll be content with them I'm sure

You do know that the J$ pads are discontinued right ? The only ones in circulation now are second-hand I think.

To answer your question, the last B-stock J$ Beyer pads were being sold January~March of this year for around $35~40. I would imagine second-hand J$'s would be around that price, maybe a bit lower.

You should just get a headphone before you even begin to think about pads.  I find this whole thing a bit ridiculous.

There's these modded pads that are quite popular around here. Have a bunch of holes stuck into them. Made by this eccentric guy. Think the name was Herg. Or Jerry. Honestly, it doesn't matter much. I hear he's a recluse anyways. You could probably make your own. Think he has pictures of them, all you have to do is dial him up if I recall.

part of the fun is trying the different pads. Seeing as I already like my Dt 990 [and have no intereste in pad swapping it] the next decision is to try an HE 400 with it's lovely J$ pads, not to mention I found a buyer already who has stock vel stock Jegs and J$ pads, just waiting on my pay check and building some hype before I buy em :3

Mmm yes I was just saying because it is very noticeable on the HE400.... Some other headphones I can listen to 128-192kbps and although it does not sound great it does not sound unlistenable like on the HE400, I notice a big difference in treble smoothness between for example 192kbps or 256kbps and FLAC on the HE400, also every other part of the sound is better, with FLAC or 320 they sound awesome and with low bitrate or bad mastering they are pretty much horrible...

Damn this forum, now you people are making me want to sell me he400 and get the he4, which I was going to get in the first place. Pretty sure my recapped pioneer sx 727 can push it far enough to tell if its a good fit for me. Would the he4 sound better for rock and metal than the 400? I'm awaiting my magnum drivers now so I want whatever would be the best sidekick.

The consensus from a few people is that the HE-4 is the best option of the HiFiMans for metal and hard rock (at least I read this from a few members who've heard the whole lineup).  They supposedly have the most airiness next to the HE-6 and their signature being slightly v-shaped suggests they'd probably be a fun/aggressive listen.  Once my new amp is finished I'll have something that can properly drive them so my hope is to pick up a used pair sometime next year.

Time to post them up for trade then! Hopefully someone will want to just swap with me, he4 for he400. I need to sell this dac destroyer and fiio e17 to anyways, and my shure 840, must, stop, obsessing over headphones...kid needs diapers...haha just kidding, but seriously this is the most addicting hobby I've ever gotten myself into.

Almost as addicting as buying/selling Diablo 2 items back in the day!

I would add the I didn't find any material that the he-4 didn't handle better than the he400. Rock, Pop, Jazz, Country...

I liked the he-4 better for everything that have in my library.

Like I mentioned earlier, its going for $50 less than the HE400 on Headamp...

That HE4 is simply gonna be unrivaled at $350. Literally the best kept secret for audiophiles.
