The ATH-CKS77. - Page 77

Hey DS I got a question (sorry [in advance] to shift thread focus).  I was considering purchasing  a full sized set (since one of my ears is shaped weird and the sound is a bit off with IEM's) and since I love the 77's so much I decided to buy a pair from AT.  Researched, narrowed down, and decided on the pro700mk2.  Looking around here for info I came across a post where you said that you hoped the ws55 werent as bad as the Pro700's.  So my question to you is what didn't you like about the 700's?

thePro700MKs are nothing like what you are thinking. If you think those will sound like these CKS77. It will shock you how bad they truly are. There are not too many headphones I had to send packing but those I had to. They are seriously flawed sounding. Overly warm. Recessed highs and mids. Those are seriously like 25% highs 25% mids and 50% bass. The highs and mids float on the overly warm bass.. On top of that they have a vice like clamping force that will squeeze your head so tight you can forget about any type of proper sound as you won't believe how crazy the clamp is on those.

If you liked how these CKS77 sound. I would go for a WS55. Those sound the closest to these and are not only way better sounding than the PRo700Mks but are exactly what your looking for. There are guys on the WS55 that have just recently discovered them and you can read more about them on this here. http://www.head-fi.org/t/567012/the-portable-bass-kings-the-pioneer-hdj500-vs-akg-518-le-vs-the-first-look-at-the-new-at-ws55-solid-bass#post_7678587

Seriously steer far far away from the Pro700Mk2. If you want a proper sound go for the WS55.

Well, I received the CKS77's today and on immediate listen, they don't compare to the CKM500's signature that I truly love.  I still enjoy the S77's, especially with some electronic music but you were right Ds when you advised me about the differences.  I think it's worth keeping both since they sound quite different to my ears.  I should have the CKM1000's by next weekend to see if its worth the huge price jump.  500's are still the king of bliss.  Man, the bass on these S77's basshead.gif

Good to hear you got them Danny. The attraction for these are the big spacious sound. Notice how big the sound is. Bigger wider and deeper than any other AT earphone to date. Not to mention the bass. lol. Well I know you got many a more superior sounding earphones but these should grow on you. Especially since you like bass.

CKM500 thread.http://www.head-fi.org/t/607006/the-new-ath-ckm500-the-best-ckm-earphone-yet#post_8329676  The CKM500 are a different sound from the CKS77.  The CKM500 has more of a sound signature that is somewhere between the CKS77 and a neutral sound.  So a more musical version of a neutral sound.. They are highly refined and represent years of CKM earphone tech from AT..

I'll give them some time since I do like the bass and overall sound sig.  They definitely do have a big sound.

It has very good mids, smooth treble and the bass is to die for.  One of the most fun, lush sounding earphones I've ever heard.  Dsnuts explains very well in this thread.

This is what you should expect through the ATH-CKS77 burn in:

There was some mild wind but completely unnoticeable at normal volumes. Overall, I'm glad how great these sound. I wasn't completely happy with my ebay pair before, but now I have about 175 hours on them.

My experience(factory rejects):

Out of the box - big bass / muffled mids / recessed, muffled highs

50 hours - slightly more bass / mids clearing up, but still noticeably muffled / less recessed, muffled highs

100 hours - big bass / less muffled mids / more forward, clearer highs (sound is full at this point)

150+ hours - bass calmed down a tiny bit, but still very big / full, clear mids / clear, bright highs

Bass and brighter high notes also are not at all fatiguing to me, which is a HUGE thumbs up. These sound better than the JVC HAFX1X by a long shot which I bought about a month ago and thought I'd have a hard time replacing them, but here come the CKS77's to knock them out of my ears. They sound full, clean, and overall even better than my over-ear Samson SR850's, not that is saying much. Thanks Dsnuts, I'm very happy with them!

Try them for yourself. Order one from Amazon and hear them for yourself as you can return them if you don't like them..Those were made for DJing and they are all about bass and not the fast type either. They are absolutely the worst AT cans ever made. You can read the review from Mike from headfonia and for some odd reason he gave the thumbs up on them and that was the reason why I ended  up with one. Look at the headphones I own. All of them have bass in them. The only ones I returned was the Pro700MK2s. If you look into that thread there were more than just me that mentioned how lame they are. I remember one guy who's main headphone was the Sony V6 and out of curiosity he ended up with a Pro700Mk2 and he was pissed after he heard them. He not only returned them but started to troll that thread which I had to put a stop to. If Bass is all anyone wants the Pro700Mk2s are fine. But I personally can't stand all bass and little highs and almost no mids..The sound is seriously gimpy.

After good burn-in time i'm started to love my CKS77. They are just a little bit worse than IE8. Another melodic, another work in details. IE8 has a more natural and uncoloured sound sig on a highest level (when paired with a good source).

My pair from A.L just arrived, wasn't too impressed with them out of the box, wondering if I got a faulty pair.

I read krakabeast's post and he closely describe what my CKS77LTD sounded like out of box, are they all like that ?

The bass is comparable to my SHE3580 (with about 80 hrs burn) but the mids and high are like from a real cheepo IEM, I don't recall the SHE3580's mids and high being as bad as that, out of box.

Would they improve significantly with burn or should I return them while I still can ?

I bet you got a bad one. My first pair from them sounded just like that where the highs and mids was just terrible. I would ask for a different one. They will send you a replacement.  Considering many of us got bad sounding ones. I am certain a percentage of these rejected pairs were probably rejected for bad sound. If they sound worse than a $10 earphone when you first get them. I would just have them change them out until they get it right.

Thanks for the response, Dsnuts.

I got them on the burn since they arrived, will give them another listen tonight and if there's no improvement, I will contact A.L for a replacement.

Incidentally, the first pair of FX101 arrived last night, out of box, they sounded way better !

Thanks for sharing the find.

So my Ebay set arrived in the mail today (I was super surprised, they said they only posted it yesterday, but they must have put it in on Sunday)

All I can say is WOW.

After listening to only 1 song with these, going back to my old IEMs (Creative EP630, so not that great) just makes them sound absolutely flat and lifeless. Since then I've chucked a few different styles of music at them (Everything from classical through to dubstep) and I have to say they haven't skipped a beat.

Thanks to everyone here for your impressions and opinions which led me to buy these awesome phones!

Also, although the ad said they were CKS77 Reds, they're actually the LTD models. I assume just a mislabeling on their part.

EDIT: And they're also the short cord version, forgot to mention that :p.
