MZ-N1 died. what next?

well, today i tried to record some new songs, and the N1 didnt want to read the disc. try another disc. nope. tried ALL my discs. nope. damn it, i was using it yesterday just fine too. just kinda went. im overdue i guess, its been 2 years+ and most people have had their optical pick-ups die within the year.

what should i do now? wait a bit for HI-MD (remember i still have minidiscs lying around) or should i go with a hard drive based player?

If you're happy with the N1, Hi-MD is a logical upgrade path right now. In my view Hi-MD is a worthy competitor to the Small Form Factor HDD players and something that may well kill off Flash players... but I don't believe it represents any serious threat to high-capacity HDD players.

If you want to step up to the next level, it's time to consider the forthcoming iRiver machines among others. If you want simply something that's an up-to-date version of what you had, Hi-MD is a good choice.

besides the IHP, iPod, Zen, and Karma, are there any forthcoming BIG developments in the hard disk music player segment? are there any differences between the IHP-100 and -120 besides the size of the hard drive?

As I understand it, a Hi-MD player will be able to play all your old discs. I think Hi-MD will be a winner, IF Sony gets the software part right. Too bad we have to wait until April to find out....

I really think that Hi-MD will be a success, 1 GB for $7 is extremely cheap!

But you're practically limited to carrying around 3-4 gig at a time before the size exceeds harddrive players. I think it'll be a strong point in car audio, though.

Purchase the MZ-NH1 when it comes out, it'll blow your mind in comparison to the N1.

Er... I'm a bit out of touch. Could someone explain what exactly a HI-MD is? Is it just larger capacity MDs?

Sorry to hear about your N1, as this unit is known to have as serious problems with defective optical blocks and do not last that long. No big loss, IMHO.

The Hi-MD route seems like a logical path to follow, but there are, still, some nice conventional MD recorders on the market.

Coming out in April you say?.... Hi-MD sounds really cool. I like the fact that it could record without compression.

But, noting how expensive 1 generation MD players were, it might be prudent to wait for a bit and just get a regular MD player for the time being. Perhaps in 2-3 years, the price would drop down to sane levels and many of the bugs might have been discovered (and patched up) by then.

'really cool'??!

Lol. Retro cool! 6 years later!! Is that a long enough wait?

Just bought mine this month new. They still seem to be sold in some specialist shops i.e. Sony shops only.
