Sony MDR MA 900 (new release from Sony) - Page 8

Oh I totally agree! Without [random pre-Industrial technology] they would be like everything else, but [random pre-Industrial technology] makes them completely innovative and entirely new and unique!

Thanks for your input regarding my question of driver size.

btw, i love the science talk.  them were some scary bugs.

i understand that there's research going on to find out better driver materials [eg, biocellulose, carbon fiber, titanium plated].

But [again, speaking ignorantly], it seems that more could be done to improve the housing/etc to get rid of unwanted resonances and stuff like that.

Just build the damn housing out of cubic zirconia, problem solved. While were at it build a Dynamic driver with the cone made from its aswell, and a layer above it that acts as a film for electrostatics. making and dynamic-electro driver, driver does bass and influences soundstaging size, the electrostatics do the rest.

I am king

Goes to show, lol. Your just a wealth of crazy stuff aren't you?

I just knew the Surrounder would come up eventually...(we've already mentioned everything else that's OT)

I have no idea on the IEM either. Maybe it's a general condemnation of all IEMs?

I read that Final Audio Design pays a lot more attention to housing regarding acoustic optimization and that this is typically not given enough attention.

Panasonic HJE900, partially made of CZ...

you know what... Not stroking my own plumage here but a CZ electro+dynamic headphone sounds epic (if it had a denon badge on it with the current level of tech, then I bet this convo would be very different)

but if its slapped together by 2 hi monkeys in a shed then yeah, we will have beats v2.

And I thought I had a good eye for picking out full-size cans in ID threads...confused_face.gif

WIR3D,

The headphone you're describing exists (it doesn't use exotic materials), it's called the AKG K340. Read about it here:

http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/two-vintage-akg-headphones-k240-sextett-and-k340-electrostatic-dynamic

http://www.head-fi.org/t/566929/headphone-csd-waterfall-plots/465#post_7881284

The general consensus is that it's neat, but not the end of the world.

The issue you run into with multiple drivers, apart from the housing dilemma, is the crossover network.

it seems like there should be more work on creating a better dynamic + electrostatic headphone.  like the martin-logan speakers.

Logans work for roughly the same reason that the K340 "failed"; the enclosures.

With a Logan speaker, the LF is handled by a dynamic driver in it's own box, and all that box has to deal with is that single driver (which is probably custom spec'd for them). Then you've got the Xstat panel sitting on top of that, and they put all their time into figuring out a perfect crossover for those two.

With a headphone though, you've got a different problem:

The flattest/most uniform LF solutions require sealed boxes, but that doesn't work out the best for headphone drivers (ever heard closed 'stats? Worse yet, seen them measured?). So even if you figure the xover perfect (or get really exotic and go external and bi-amp them, and given the prices of things like the Ed10 and SR-009, I don't think this is that much of a stretch) - you've still got the enclosure to deal with.

I think the problem you'll always come back to is some sort of compromise where you have neither a perfect 'stat or a perfect dynamic. Simply due to the enclosures.
