First question;  The MUSIC folder holds MP3s and the OMGAUDIO holds the OMA files (Atrac) .  I'm not sure where other file types go.  I've been busy translating and doing other things lately.  I'm sure all is OK where X-App puts things,  They seem to know what they are doing, those Sony programmers.

As far as equalization; I haven't done anything with that yet.  I'm trying to learn about XApp before I load it up too much.

However, if you know how to get to the properties window for an album:

 There is a drop down box on the middle left with an (E) next to the Japanese spelling of equalizer. I suppose there might be a way to add your own curves or labels-the stock ones include only 1 English word.

In the following pic, an arrow points to the EQ controls near top right.  Try poking around there until it makes sense or I can catch up.

  The area I enclosed in a red box is what Sony calls the Discovery Zone: at least it's not the Disco Zone.  There are several ways to change that.  I was not thrilled with the "poxy app" when I first saw it either.  It starts up by showing Sony's Mora site where the Japanese market can buy or download music (in Atrac maybe?).  The arrow labeled Controls points to a column of icons that control the Zone.

The A in a magnifying glass displays an alphabet that has to do with the artist in some way-partly alphabetical? Click to choose.

The CD icon starts a parade of your albums thru the Zone.  Double click one to play it.

The music note icon displays your library by genre. Double click to choose one.

 Info displays Mora.

If you choose the Mix button on the right, portions of tracks from your library will play while their art is displayed. (Press the arrow within a selection to start it.

I'm glad you were able get so much loaded already.  I was having visions of being hung by my own HP cable.

My first answer was apparently in error. I thought there were Android Apps that could play or convert the Atrac, but maybe it was Flac instead. Try reading through the posts in the Head-Fi thread :

OK  Try this:

Changing the settings of music
 
The functions associated with music have more parameters.
  1.
  In the Home screen, tap [Apps] on the screen-then tap [music player] the music note icon on the screen.
 
2.
  Tap (Menu)  the 4 horizontal lines on the black border, bottom right below the screen, then [Settings].
 
3.
  Tap the option Equalizer  to adjust.

This is in the Walkman Guide which loads on the PC when you do the install.

Hi, Finally got around to installing x-app last night and unfortunately it is not going smoothly! 

Can you just confirm from your install photos where that X-app install file is from - the Walkman itself or did you download from the Sony JP site? As both either of those way's I have encountered the same issue as when OK-Guy tried it with it going 99% of the install only at the end of it to fail and say "cannot install with the language system" then some Japanese writing and 51ff at the end which I think may be an error code. 

Would do some screen shots but got to shot out for a while soon, but your screen shots differ to what I see if the files set up is from the Walkman folder files.  

Stumbled at first hurdle, might be me just miss construed something simple along the way hence I am making a right muck up of getting this program fired up.

I want to try my hand @ the X app so it speeds up the process before I try up loading potentially 64gb of music.  

You must of been a busy boy manually loading that amount of cover art for 600+ tracks! 

Need clarification from Now What on the X-app install as I am getting the exact same issue you had with it not recognizing our o/s language.

Hello Fortis!   The X-App installer has to be modified to allow installation with an English operating system. It's fairly easy to modify the installer from Sony JP. On the New Sony WM Review thread, page 87, message 1292, clklow01 showed us how he did it.

2) Download 7-zip from http://www.7-zip.org/ and install it.

3) Right click X-application and select 7-zip then Extract to "x-APPLICATION_S_V3003\".

4) Open the newly created "x-APPLICATION_S_V3003" folder and look for a file called "SetupXAPP" (it is a configuration setting file, not the EXE file because there are 2 files with this name).

5) Open that file and go to the line with "supportoslang    =Japanese", change Japanese to English and then save the file.

6) Then you can double click SetupXAPP.EXE to start installing the program. It should install fine now.

Step 4.   The software bundled with the Z1070 doesn't give such easy access to that SetupXAPP.ini file, hence the download of x-App from Sony.

Step 5 tells the install that it's ok to install on an English OS

In step 6, do as it says-don't click on the original .exe, choose the smaller .exe.

Then follow the screen prints of the install in my profile.

 I did some experimenting with M Go & X-App, including loading the same album in my WM using both M Go & X-App. 

The PC showed a copy in MUSIC folder and another copy in OMGAUDIO.  The WM only showed one album cover in its library, but I used up 2 albums worth of memory

That and some other fooling around leads me to say that M Go always puts music in the WM MUSIC folder and X-App always puts music in the WM OMGAUDIO folder. The WM music player displays total contents together. On the PC, M Go and X-App only show their own folder's contents.   So don't worry about the names of folders as they are misleading. A transfer could be ugly!

If you are using SonicStage, it must be that SS only uses OMGAUDIO also.

 Using both programs can waste memory if you aren't careful, but I was just doing so to figure out how things work.

Thank you Now What for taking the time there, I had totally forgot about the original post on how to do that on the other Walkman thread, knew I should of bookmarked the page when I first read it! 

Followed those instructions and viola I have just spent the last 10 minutes exploring it since it's download and the euphoria of watching it do an automatic internet search for any albums without art only to see it actually find the right cover is like going from candles to electricity. 

Will be interesting to see if it can rustle up any missing art for more the more low key artist out there that are not so mainstream.....

I am not a programmer kind of guy but do wonder out of curiosity why it has to be done as a zip file and then extracted to a new folder for the change to work before installing, like it went through some de tagging of a Sony lock on the file or something.

But now look forward to getting up to speed with your tutorials on X-app and then having a mess around with it this weekend with a sample folder of music then hopefully once confident load this Walkman up for the first time with a serious amount of tunes. 

Only thing I have noticed so far quickly to your screen shots of X-app is on a lot of script in the menus on my one instead of it been in Japanese writing like your shots mine have just showing little square boxes for what would of been each Japanese character, so not sure why that is but at least it is still showing a English letter in brackets after it. 

Thanks again Now What, look forward to getting to grips with X-app and been able to use it as the every day tool for managing music for the Z1070.  The experience so far has inspired me to think about learning Japanese as a language though!

Hello Fortis, I suppose that the original exe file is compressed (zipped) to make it smaller and make it a single file so the customer doesn't lose any needed files. The first thing it does when clicked is unzip itself.  We have to extract it manually it to get access to that ini file we want to change. Then we start the rest of the install.  I tried the same process on the software that comes with the Z, but I didn't see an ini file when I first extracted that exe file and so didn't pursue it.

    I use Windows 7 Ultimate with a Japanese language pack installed.  It uses Japanese where another computer can't display the text and so you get boxes and other characters.  I'm glad you included that screen print, I had no idea how much it was doing for me. X-App would be much harder to deal with without it. Lucky for you that it at least displays the English letters. I had wrongly assumed that most of those windows & menus were image files that would at least make them recognizable when comparing to mine.  I may compile a list of letters and what they mean.  

When you use SonicStage, don't you get album art automatically installed?  (Perhaps this is a dumb question...)  If not, there should be a setting to do so.  I found the one for Media Go today in preferences in the CD import window...

Also, is the Help file (F1) displayed in Japanese or just boxes & stuff?

I'm really loading up with music now and will probably ask what can I delete from my WM-Z to get more memory (that game can be got rid for a start)... also what programs I can 'force a close' on to maximise performance ( don't need the internet stuff or that Sony music app)... You guys are educating me.

After poking around the internet, I think SS was only able to automatically add what was on the CD itself.  Sony bought Gracenote in 2008, by which time it had stopped updating anything but Japan SS, replacing English SS with MediaGo. So MGo & X-App find the art, but SS doesn't.

I don't know much about Android, but I'm sure some here do.  (There's a game on the WM?! -Yeah, that's gotta go!  All I want is lots of flash memory and great audio.)  To get rid of stuff on Android, put your finger on the icon for a few seconds and a trash bin icon appears. Maintaining your finger touch, drag the offending item over to the bin. I think that removes it entirely, not just the icon.

We're all educating each other here! 

X-App install correction!

I now know that I misunderstood the last step of the X-App install.  At the end of the install, X-App opens in the background and the following box is displayed:

I thought it was supplying the option to set X-App as the default file opener of (M) Music, (V) Video, and (P) Pictures files.  I now know that it is giving the option to have X-App update any of those 3 file type folders whenever it opens, if the files have been changed.  Just in case that affects anyone, I will now show how this option is always available to be changed.    

 In this pic, arrow #1 in the upper left points to the Tools menu labeled with Japanese plus (T) in the top border of X-App.  Clicking that opens the box displayed.  The bottom item marked by the arrow 2 in the pic is (O) for options/settings.  Choosing that leads to the next pic.

 This box has plenty of settings and so may not look like the one shown here at first.  In the white box on the left side choose the 2nd item down.  Now the configuration should match the picture here.  In the shaded section are the choices for Music, Video, & Pictures folders. Choose those that you want to update when you open X-App.  The white box in the middle should update to show your file locations.  The (A) button below that window is to add a folder while the (D) deletes folders.  When you have what you prefer, just choose OK.

That sounds frustrating!  The WM online guide makes it sound easy to do a factory default reset.
