  I don't think any of the Z models play FLAC without a 3rd party player ap.  How did you transfer the file to the demo unit?  MediaGo converts files to MP3 while downloading if the file type isn't one of the DAP's native formats.  I used Poweramp  for a trial week to try playing FLAC.  I think I probably dragged & dropped.  The album art had no problems.

just getting MediaGo to recognise SonicStage, like it does with WMP automatically would be a boon in fast transfer... any ideas?

 I never had SonicStage, but if you want to add files from your computer or its peripheral devices to Media Go:  In MGo, click on the file menu and then choose Add Media to Library.  That will bring up a little browser window you can use to go to SStage's folder and on to where its music files are stored.  Add Media is also found at the bottom of the Library window.

OR, while in MGo's Library, go to preferences at the bottom of the screen & click on that to set up some options.  Under the Network choice, you can choose sharing options (you are on your own there, I haven't touched it in a while).  You can also choose whether or not Gracenote is available for getting album info.

OR, again in MGo Library, go to Tools up at the top and choose Setup Assistant where you can also choose which Libraries to grab files from and where not to by leaving them out.

Since I use MGo for the US Z & XApp for the J-Z, I only let each AP see its own library unless I specifically use the browser to move a certain file!  Otherwise, both APs will grab whatever they can and albums get merged within the respective libraries and I feel like rebooting with a very large hammer...  To avoid this, in Library, go to File and choose Library and then Manage Library Folders where you can remove Folders or add them at will.  I have been known to add Folders here (with nasty labels that I am quite sure Microsoft would not appreciate) that I keep on my Desktop so that I can easily drop music files into them for MGo and be sure that Windows won't tell WMP about them.

Edit  I didn't answer the MP3 question.  Never having used SStage, I am unsure what file types it has; that would depend on which SS version is used.  MGo converts files to MP3 if the player doesn't play the original file so it might take care of things itself.  I remember reading of a conversion feature between SS and XApp.  If you can't download the files once they are in MGo's library, that might be the answer.

Sony released version 4.0 of X-App on October 1.  The link to version 3 in earlier posts here is now dead.  The Sony page says version 4 extends compatibility to the F800 & S770 series WM.

I downloaded this new version tonight after creating a restore point on my PC and backing up the XApp music files and all went smoothly. (Too bad my phone upgrade to Android ICS didn't go so smoothly!  No F800 in my future...).  The same trick as in the earlier posts was needed -unpacking the EXE file to change the INI file OSLanguage to English.  After that everything was exactly the same as the version 3 install.  I didn't even uninstall version 3.  The version 4 EXE just replaced it.

So far, I can't even notice a difference, but I haven't spent much time on it.  My experience with X-App has been so good that I decided to break my post ICS rule of "If it ain't broke, don't update it!".

The following Japanese link is for converting SonicStage music files to X-App files if anyone needs it.  I didn't need it, so I can't vouch for it.

  I hadn't even heard of gap-less till I joined Head Fi a few months back.  Most of my recent listening has been with a US WM playing MP3 in a somewhat noisy work truck. What I had seemed to notice was a click between tracks on one or two occasions and a couple instances of a quiet fade out getting cut prematurely, but this last may have just been sound lost in road noise.  I'll have to listen more closely with less ambient noise before commenting.

See various posts above if you haven't installed X-App before (it's in Japanese for Japanese Windows) , especially posts 52 and 124, to make it work (in Japanese still) on other language systems.

Version 5 reportedly works better, especially if you use the Sony Mora site or if you are inflicted with Windows 8.

The install was the same as previous versions (to my memory) EXCEPT that the last step was a box with Japanese script and a big down arrow and boxes labeled (Y) and (N).  I didn't bother to read/translate the Japanese and went with the default (Y).  This immediately rebooted my PC when I didn't really want to.

A couple days ago I received a NW-A867/VI  "Violet Rush" 64GB WM from a friend in Japan.  I believe it's only available in Sony store in Japan.

I just wanted a large capacity Japanese model for listening thru my car audio with player controls.  Since it was just for use on the road I was willing to give up some SQ in order to avoid Android annoyances.  When I opened up X-App with this player on USB, I found that X-App had changed colors from the blue as seen in earlier posts here to violet to match the WM.  I knew this happens for some colored WM, but I didn't know it did so with this model. 

   The pop up box provided options on the color change when I first used the new WM.      (A) Apply new color,  (U) Don't apply, (D) Standard X-App color.

This can be changed later by going to X-App  (T) Tools menu, then (O) Settings, then highlight the top item in the left column. The right column then includes 2 circles to choose (W) to match your WM color or (D) to decline the option. At this point, my X-App stays purple when I switch from this A a Z unless I use these setting options to toggle back to blue.

Just a curiosity I thought I'd share...

Want one.... F or Z or this A. Sony is doing a good job keeping me interested. I almost would say that they are clawing there way back into the game. If only they would give all other countries the options of the 64GB.

I should have mentioned that this A is entirely in Japanese-it is not Android. Same as the white,black & pink versions of A867.

As with X-App, you can go to Sony Japan support  and use Google Chrome to translate the HTML manual or download a PDF version and use Google Translate or similar to learn the device. X-App has a good Help guide also.  I use 2 windows side by side in English & Japanese to find what I need quickly.
