Happy Birthday Johann! Here's a tribute to my favorite composer of all time. I lifted this image from a Michael Lawrence email. He created a great film called Bach and Friends that I can easily recommend:

Anyway, I intended this to be a thread for the possibility of discovering new recordings to add to the library. I'll start with a great string interpretation of the Goldberg Variations from Les Violons Du Roy:

Bach: Goldberg Variations

Enjoy!!

I'm totally kidding, that's terrible.

Most of my favorites are the usual classics:

Casals' Cello Suites

Szigeti's Sonatas and Partitas

Gould's Goldberg Variations

Fischer's WTC

My favorite Bach vocalist is the late great Lorraine Hunt Lieberson. She brings so much raw power and feeling like I have never heard beforehand.

I don't have a lot of Starker in my collection, but this one is amazing:

JANOS STARKER plays Boccherini, Bach, Vivaldi, Corelli, Locatelli, Valentini

This is a great DVD, with a kind of masterclass / introduction to each suite. It even kept my kids entranced even though it's in Russian with subtitles. These recordings include my favorite interpretation of the 3rd suite in C major.

Bach - Cello Suites / Rostropovich

^ I make that 6 out of 12 posts voting for the solo suites for cello. Ok some of you have picked the wrong cellist, but it's still a surprise to me how many folk love the solo suites. Encore!
