Also this is not necessarily true - a good replaygain tag doesn't change the sound at all - it's just an added tag that you can later change or even delete - be wary about actually overwriting files though, this type of gain will change the music, like MP3Gain for example. Foobar can do both types and if you are using lossless music like flac, alac you can't actually change the music...it's always just a tag.

There's a reason ReplayGain is called ReplayGain. During playback the audio player reads the RG values in the tags and adjust the gain accordingly.

 

If your audio player doesn't support RG, it won't adjust the gain.

In that case: if you have a lossless music library, you could convert to AAC (for example) with RG-processing enabled.
