Car overload... too many... AAARRRGGGHHH!!

If you want to buy a car, you go to the events, not the auction. Essentially you can get the same thing for 25% less, without the other extraneous garbage. Ran into a ton of cool car people too, and some wankers (but there's a lesser number of those).

So I'm standing there looking at the new Porsche 911 GT3, checking it out, when I hear at my elbow, "do they have anyone to talk with about these?" The voice is very familiar, I turn and it's a sort-of-scruffy Chris Pine. "I think they're over by the bar." He looks at me, "that figures". Very calmly I say, "I've already had the tech rundown and the guy unlocked it for me, what do you want to know, Chris?" He laughed, we made introductions, and I talked with him about the car, and Porsches in general, for about 20 minutes. Turns out he's a big Porsche fan, asks me about my experiences with them. I steer him towards the coming 911 Turbo, or a pre-owned Carrera GT (his eyes popped a little at the price of latter). The "rep" finally came back over, smelling like booze, and Chris said, "don't worry guy, we've got this, go back and get another drink. In fact, go get me a soda. You want something Jer?". biggrin.gif I shook my head. "Good man" and he roughly pats the guy on the shoulder... then the guy goes and gets it! And he's not just a rep, he's the VP of sales for NA Porsche! I'm dying trying not to laugh! Gave him my card and told him to drop by next time he's on the east coast, he can try out some different cars. Great guy, very personable.

Anyway, so many cars; new, classics, concepts, it's all too much to take in, really. You'd need most than a week to absorb it all. However, the new hypercars are stealing the show, seeing the LaFerrari in the flesh really gets the pulse going. Incredibly gorgeous car.

I'm finding a few interesting auction lots thus far...

I'm kind of surprised you weren't "required" to bring this one home:
http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=CA0813-161166&entryRow=8&lottype=&startRow=1

I really like the Allard:
http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=CA0813-161303&entryRow=139&lottype=&startRow=133

It would be fun to see the faces of the members at your track when you pulled up in this:
http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=CA0813-161246&entryRow=79&lottype=&startRow=73

But the real gem was this baby - perfect for you and the Mrs to start a wing walking act...

I know. I was this close ---| |---, but the bidding got out of hand and it isn't worth 60k, not even in perfect, unrestored condition, which it wasn't. However, the good news is I've got a line on a `91 M3 racer that's for sale here and I'm buying it.

She has a Crosley SS, really nice one too, but I was interested in the Allard, if it had its original V8 I would have bid on it, but it probably would have went for >140k if it did. No planes, I know you know my wife is scared of heights, right? What do you think about this? It's still available and can likely get it for 20k:

That's from the fryer and into the fire, there. Frankly I don't think I have the reflexes to drive it. I suppose I could put it up for display, but that kind of seems like a waste, I'm sure it'll go for 600k. I am thinking about the McLaren Can Am, it didn't sell because the reserve is around 180k, I'm not sure it's worth that. Still mulling it over. I hit RM after Mecum, talk about snooty, it was like culture shock after Mecum. I'd been by already to check out some lots, but this was way different, very hoity-toity. It was fruitful though, I won this great no reserve `84 512 BBi for a good chunk under CMV. Folks were ignoring the "smaller" lots, and anything under a half mil was small. Pictures don't do it justice, that's a beautiful and well-maintained Fezzer. Tomorrow's the big day for me, most of what I'm looking at is going up then; we're hitting up Mecum for the brunch thing, then taking the papoose and Rosa back to the hotel (changing into our fancy duds), then going on to Gooding. If I thought RM was high society, I'm sure I'm in for even more there. biggrin.gif Ones to watch:

All the early midgets, not sure what they'll go for. Going to try and snap up a few.

http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=CA0813-161465&entryRow=43&lottype=&startRow=37 (Rare)

http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=CA0813-161505&entryRow=86&lottype=&startRow=85 (Curious what it goes for)
http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=CA0813-161522&entryRow=105&lottype=&startRow=97 (another that I'm curious about)
http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=CA0813-161583&entryRow=174&lottype=&startRow=169 (low miles, all factory options)
http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=CA0813-161586&entryRow=177&lottype=&startRow=169 (I won't go nuts, but I want to see where it ends up)
http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=CA0813-161597&entryRow=188&lottype=&startRow=181 (love the color, well taken care of too, can be converted to TT w/ comp pack)
http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=CA0813-168672&entryRow=196&lottype=&startRow=193 (more nagging from my wife) wink.gif
http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=CA0813-161617&entryRow=207&lottype=&startRow=205 (very rare, may sell cheap)
http://www.goodingco.com/vehicle/1974-lancia-stratos-hf-stradale/
http://www.goodingco.com/vehicle/1997-mclaren-f1/ (I know... but well, we'll see)
http://www.goodingco.com/vehicle/1971-maserati-ghibli-4-9-ss/ (becoming very rare, no reserve)
http://www.goodingco.com/vehicle/1974-bmw-2002-turbo/ (just because)

Oh, and check this, someone supposedly spent 200k restoring and modding this 400i. Madness. eek.gif

Get the McLaren M8E.

There has to be more to the story on the 400i 'vette abomination. I'm guessing the original must have caught on fire or been a complete wreck.

I love the 512 BBi - the Boxer was one of my dream cars in high school. I used to sneer at the Magnum PI 308 because I knew the "real" Ferrari was the 512!

Wow - there are some incredible cars in the Gooding auction. Why do people that own cars like those sell them? Are they mostly being sold by the heirs from someone's estate?

People in financial trouble, or heirs, now that values are rebounding (like I'd predicted 6 months ago) it's becoming very attractive. I have no idea about the 400i, I can try to ask.

I found this cool (and rather well-dressed) young man, maybe 18-20 y/o, to work as our valet/gopher at the auctions. I should have done this yesterday, makes life so much easier (and he makes $300 /day).
