WhereTF was I and how did I miss this?!? eek.gifeek.gif Go to 3:56.

I fired my assistant, she so dropped the ball! mad.gif

(Of course I didn't fire her, but it is her job to catch this stuff and I'm not entirely happy that she didn't.)

I didn't watch the video, but was that about the auction of the dictator's son's estate items? I was wondering if you were going to get in on that...

Wow, the next story was more interesting to me - someone got all those exotics for only $4M??

Aww - Pepper got the boot - that sucks.

I have a solution for you...

Well, it turns out I may be, peripherally, I'm talking with a broker about 2 of the cars.

That's the story I was talking about. And no, I didn't can her. rolleyes.gif Read the annotation on the post, at the bottom. I simply asked her what happened that I wasn't made aware of it. tongue.gif

Oh! I entirely missed the footnote! OK - well, I think Tony fired Pepper about 70 zillion times - only he could never actually do it because Pepper was the only one that new *how* to fire someone.

The news where the supercars were seized in France was actually from a long time ago. It just that they have them auctioned and sold recently.

You shouldn't be too mad though. I also have forgotten about that story. It's just that it popped up in Jalopnik again that I remembered it.

I would've also missed those cars if I were not in Paris or in France.

Here, this was the news that they were impounded.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/feb/06/france-africa-autocrats-corruption-inquiry

It was from more than a year ago. I'm surprised they need 1 year and 4 months to sell those cars.

Surprised you don't have an automated web crawler to sift through that stuff and generate reports.

I disagree. If Pepper does get the boot, at some point, I'd rather have these guys....biggrin.gif

Tonight my wife was asking, "Isn't it time to take a break from getting more cars?", again. I suppose I'll just have to explain this every few months. confused.gif The problem is, she sees them as consumables of some kind (I buy them and *poof* the money is gone), but doesn't feel that way about mutual funds and stocks. It's perplexing. The more expensive cars I'm purchasing, they're only going to appreciate, most of them substantially in the not-too-distant future. There are good examples available, and either I buy them now or pay a lot more down the line. Like any investment, there's not really a bad time to buy, but if you can swing it, sooner is better than later.

That sounds complicated, I'm not a software person. redface.gif She has a big database of brokers and cars that is fairly comprehensive, I'm just surprised we missed that auction entirely. TBT, I get the feeling they didn't try to advertise it, which would imply some sort of collusion was going on. Those cars should have gone for a couple million more than that, on a bad day.

Done right it's really no harder than automated bidding on thievesBay.. It may be worth your while to have some software peon whip something up. Who knows, done right it may be of interest as a service to other collectors as well.

That sort of software is not too difficult - wget to fetch the urls, and then it's all about the ability to parse the page for key words, follow links and submit search queries. The problem is that unlike an ebay sniping program, where you are always hitting the same site, you need to have different logic to deal with every site. The other big problem is the ongoing changes to the software that are required every time the site changes something. A small change in the site design could mean new logic for the parser to read it. You also would probably need to be careful to build the app to simulate the user agent and headers of one of the major browsers so that you don't get blocked by any site security that is intended to prevent scripts running against the site.

I checked on it, WE did, actually, and I'm hiring a developer who says he can create a crawler that will get what we want, filter, parse, and even translate it for us, then actively keep the info in a DB for us to use as we want. He's done almost the same thing for a big sports memorabilia firm. We can set thresholds where, with certain tags, my minion can be emailed, or even sent a text, when a specific criteria is met. Sounds snnnnazzy. cool.gif I checked out a little of what he did for the other guy and, even though it's a little clunky (he's polishing it up for us and upgrading the interface), it seems to do what I want. I was expecting to find an eye-watering price, but it's surprisingly reasonable (he charges for the whole project then /hr for updates). Since he has a, more or less, complete product for the other guys, we should get something in our hands in 7-10 days. biggrin.gif Thanks for the idea dudes.

Here, have a bunny!

(FYI, bunnies rock, very cool pets.)

You're welcome. I'd be interested in hearing what results you have with the software.

I'm quite overrun with wild cottontails where I am at the moment. So much so that it is not uncommon to see a coyote walking down the sidewalk around 3 am.
