What got me thinking about whether one-off cars are "supercars" is the Will.I.Am car they showed on Top Gear.

I don't know nor care how fast this abomination goes - it is not a supercar...

I saw it. Looks dreadful, to me. I can't say I'm a fan of all the strange angles and broken lines.

Looks pretty futuristic, especially the instrument panel:

Hmm, this sounds like some of the bling-happy headphones...

To justify its lofty pricetag, the Lykan will come with interiors lined in diamonds, gold and platinum. Owners will also receive a Cyrus Klepcys Watch valued at $200,000, according to World Car Fans.

Well, it does look like a lot of jagged edges. But I'm not sure if they have any performance benefit or are just for looks. Seems like the car for the young millionare (I think UAE has plenty of them).

I think if you are spending $3.4M on a car, then you are more than a Millionaire - I would guess your Daddy would need to be closer to a Billionaire - or at least a several hundred millionaire.

I think it's just like everything else that is done in that region of the world - an attempt to be the "most" - just like the hotels, skyscrapers, airports, etc. It also appears(at least thus far) to be a lot of marketing and cool pictures, but no pictures or discussion of the business end of the machine that is supposed to give the performance they are talking about - just pictures of the externals and the dash. Saying you can do 245 mph and 0-60 in 2.8 seconds isn't exactly the same as actually doing it. My bet is that we won't ever see an actual road test of that car. They are making 7 of them, and those 7 will go immediately into locked and environmentally controlled garages in the Middle East. In other words, it's another Middle East PR event. I hope I'm wrong, but that's what I'm feeling.

Well I hope it doesn't end up like the Aston Martin One-77. They've been featured in magazines, but I've never seen one on shows like Top Gear etc where they can test them out.

Also, I have a feeling this car is not entirely new, and starts out as a lamborghini or something. I hope I'm wrong.

Daaaaaamn, I'd forgotten the Will.I.Am car, that's one extremely ugly vehicle. It looks like a reject from a bad `80s sci-fi film.

Who told him he had "style"? Is it because he was in a group that had Fergie running around half naked? Is he aware that he was most certainly NOT the main attraction? rolleyes.gif No one really cared that he was in the group or not. Remember on Top Gear, you could tell that Clarkson was fighting not to say what he thought about the car. He was breaking out in a sweat and I thought he might go into convulsions.

It starts life as a Gallardo. So, umm, that's disappointing.

The One-77 was never meant to be reviewed, because it really isn't that fast, compared to other $1M+ cars. It's a luxury "statement" car, like a Maybach. I will say one thing, though, it is very pretty.

So the take-away is: Obob, yet again, does not "get" nut-buster Veblen goods. ph34r.gif

Also what the crap is "IAMAUTO" - tell me this is a joke, like Mugatu and Zoolander, and not something that someone, somewhere, actually believes should exist...

That's Will.I.Am's car company... in Oakland (not kidding). LOL! He's actually quite serious about it.

I get the supercar/hypercar thing, rich guys and gals need something to spend their money on. I'm not anywhere near the point where I'd say, "gee, I can't think of anything else to buy", and will likely never be (thank God), but there are folks like that out there. $200k watches, $80M jets, $150M yachts, etc.. The really weird part is, they can't just sit on it, they have to spend it (or it's strongly recommended by their accountants). If they don't, it's simply bad money management. "You have X amount of equity to cash out to cover your deductions", etc.. It's like tax-free spending, and who doesn't enjoy that? Remember last year when my money guy told me I should really cash-out 1.5M or I'd miss out on getting it tax free? Same thing, only on a much larger scale. Well, when that happens, you can buy 100 $20,000 cars, or one $2M car. biggrin.gif The fit, finish, and even smell of those types of goods is different. They really have the "quality of excess" distilled down to a pure formula.

Oh, Ferrari's new F70. I could do without the "bubble head" roof.

My Dilbertesque engineer's brain will not allow me to accept the concept of Veblen goods. I do know many people that absolutely follow the Veblen path. Most of those people work in Sales & Marketing. wink.gif

There was a recent news report that Will.I.Am had his car impounded by the cops. He was driving it around LA without a license plate and without any kind of car registration.

BTW - I thought his car company was in East LA, not Oakland?

I have no doubt the companies that helped him build that thing were laughing their @sses off.

Will.I.Am does have a remarkable resemblance to the glasses-wearing geek from the Thunderbirds...

About the "is it a supercar or not" debate,

Would you consider something like an ultima gtr to be a supercar ? It has : the performance figures (it's one of the very best street legal track cars around), the exclusivity, you can have it built for you by a local artisan/mechanic ( it supports the local economy !) the only area where it falls short being the look.

See - that's the type where I have a hard time calling that a supercar. It's race car kit that can be made street legal. Somehow that just doesn't seem like "supercar" material - in the same that buying an old F1 car and putting a fiberglass body and bumpers on it would not create a supercar.
