Altmann Tera Player - Page 49

Screens add noise. Also all size and power requirements. It also makes a player reliant on you taking attention off something else to change the song. Why bother? I can navigate my Tera Player while it's still in my pocket, by telling a friend to keep hitting the next button, and many other situations. It's really convenient knowing I dont have to look.

Also, it sounds like you wanna pay $1200 for a Tera Player and a nice packaging and accessories? It could even cost more. That's ridiculous. The Tera Player is built like a tank, it doesn't need a case really. Each person will use it with their own headphones or IEM's as they wish, so a case for traveling is pointless. A point that could be made would be to have the PortaPro's included but they're so cheap it's easier for shipping just to buy them separately. What exactly did you mean about extra goodies or accessories?

impression: this thing sounds like a $700ish desktop dac perhaps.. definitely better in technicality and musicality than my CA dacmagic. the music is just flowing, very black background, very neutral sounding. this little thing is standing way above my $400 CA dacmagic as a standalone dac. impressive..

but i still can't overlook the lack of screen over the beautiful sound of this sweet little thing. plus the packaging is just pure rubbish, $1100 wav player with nothing but plain carton as its box? no extra goodies or accessories? you gotta be kidding me!

Yet everybody uses extremely noisey computers as a source. (Well not mewink_face.gif)

These are rationalizations. Pocket navigation and screens are not mutually exclusive. The correct answer for those that want a screen is to have one that becomes quiet when off or is isolated well enough to not matter. Of course, 'not for you' works as well and is perfectly acceptable. Navigation is fine for a limited library and carrying mutliple cards around but what you find acceptable isn't for most. It's fine for those like you but it's not the best way. Everyting involves compromize. We choose those that fit our expectations. Good on you but it's a pain to carry a library and navigate for most. Doesn't make it good or bad but there's no point in trying to convince us that it's the right way.

Yes, 100% yes. well, 98%. It's definitely not for everyone. The idea of the Tera Player is it's pocketable. It's extremely small. It wouldn't have that technical edge if it had a screen that would have to be well isolated.

And I don't see carrying a library as a terrible pain, It's always in my wallet and I have more storage than my iPod 7th gen. Little card holder thing I've posted on here before about.

I thought that card holder was excellent.

It is. I don't even use all the cards so I use one of them as storage to transfer files in a crunch and no flash drives around. Also, With the dropping price of 64gb microSD cards, I could easily hold more than 500gig's in the card in the relatively near future, but I don't need that type of capacity yet.

I need the best free WAV program to convert music for my for my soon to come Tera Player.Anybody can please help?

Another thig, if i have 24/192 files is better to leave them like that or convert them to 44.1 16 bit? Do you hear that much of a diffrence on those two type of files on the Tera Player?

Many thanks.gs1000.gif

Another free program available for both Windows and Linux is XCFA which can be found here.

It can rip to any format or convert existing files from one format to another. It has worked 100% with my Tera-Player. Some other conversion programs I tried did not convert cleanly to .wav and the Tera would not play them.

I don't have many 24/192 files, but those that I tried both ways sounded very similar to me. Personally, I am not sure that the slight difference in SQ justifies the huge additional file size. I am somewhat skeptical of the quality of many so-called HiRes remasters. More depends on the quality of the initial recording and mastering/re-mastering than on the inherent differences between 24/192 and 16/44.1. Additionally, there are few IEM's or phones that are commonly used with portable equipment that can actually reproduce these differences.

As far as bit depth is concerned, you're better off converting first to 16 bit with dithering (foobar2000 will do it properly), since the Tera Player will do worse (cropping the lower 8 bits). As for the sampling rate, Charles says the Tera Player will play any sampling rate natively, without downsampling, but I still have my doubts.

In any case, 16 bit / 44.1 kHz will be completely transparent, and the files will be much smaller. So you might as well do a proper conversion of all your files to 16 bit and 44.1 kHz (both in a single run), you can't lose.

Whenever I click on the blue "here" in my post, it takes me to the XCFA website. I tried a download and it worked perfectly. Here is the link:

Hope that works for you.

All of the so-called HiRez files that I have downloaded have been .flac files. Converting them to .wav 16/44.1 often results in an unplayable files. All of my conversions from .flac 16/44.1 to .wav 16/44.1 have been successful. I am not sure why this happens, but I am suspecting that there are some errors present in the HiRes files that causes a corrupt conversion.

Use foobar HiFlight and you won't have those issues ;). I know I deal alot with hi rez files and this was an issue using other programs but not foobar.
