Altmann Tera Player - Page 44

Hi lee730,

Thank you for your interest.

I've been reading your posts in DX100 forum and here and really enjoy your opinions and the advice you give.

I was really hoping you would hear a TP and that you could give us your outlook.

I sold my DX100 in Sept before firmware 1.2.7 was out.

I was using firmware 1.2.3 with my DX100 and to ber honest, I really enjoyed the sound. It certainly wasn't the reason I sold it.

If I could of kept both players I probably would have, in the hope that future firmware upgrades for DX100 would have improved it.

I think it has so much potential.

My biggest issues were the sluggish UI (I found it very fustrating), size, battery life, and heat.

In the end, the TP fit my needs better.

I hope you have the opportunity to hear the TP one day. I would love to hear your review.

I am glad you enjoy your Tera Player. Can you compare the Westone4 and Audio PFE-232 ?

Will be nice to hear more since i really enjoy my W4R, and they do match with this little shinny DAP.

How long did it took for yours to arrive since you paid? Thanks

Yeah you see I hated the sound on 1.2.3. It was very artificial and boosted. Not natural at all. I would have sold the unit for sure being stuck on that firmware. I could hear it right away, especially in the bass. Was bloated and distorted. Treble and mids were also boosted and aggressive. The sound quality actually degraded on 1.2.3 firmware. It was much better on 1.1.7. :( But 1.2.7 is a lot better now and IMO the best out of them all followed by 1.1.7 :). It took a while for the others to follow suite but most of them caught on afterward to what I was talking about.

It would be nice though to get to hear a Tera Player one day and see what all the hype is about. It would have to be extremely good for me to forgo so many basic features but yet it still has me curious :).

Me: So becouse you use a 16 bit DAC and the Tera can play up to 24, that mean we loose detailes? I mean it does downsample to 16 bit from 24 right?

Charles: Downsampling is a process where the sample-rate is reduced. This does not happen in the Tera-Player as it always plays the original native sample-rate of the wav file.

When playing a 24-bit file, only the upper 16 bits are sent to the DAC, because the DAC is 16 bit.
Now that sounds as if 1 third of your resolution is lost, but that is not the case. The level of the lower 8-bits of a 24 bit wav file is lower than -96dB, so you actually lose stuff below 1/65536, and this probably is lower than the background hiss of any DAP you can create with current technology.

This Tera Player is really impressive.I can't wait to get mine.

Audiophile DAP that advertises support for high res audio does the worst kind of downconversion, without dithering… it's bordering on false advertising… I bet the list of supported sampling rates is bogus too!

I don't believe in hi rez etc, I believe in my hearing and this DAP is the best I've hears. You have to try it for yourself, them comment.

Whoever does believe in the superiority of 24 bit audio and bought a Tera Player, just got scammed (edit: the website clearly says the DAC is 16 bit). But thanks for sharing that information, you definitely did the right thing. It's Charles who should have been much more transparent about it, and not just in private.

Oh great. Another non-believer...Are you here to preach your superiority and our inferiority? or troll us cause we're too happy with our DAP? Oh wait, same thing. Charles has shared this information in the past. A few months ago in fact. Go read up if you are gonna start things here, I'm sure you'll find plenty of ammo but you'll also read about many happy owners, thats the important part. that whatever you use on a daily basis, you enjoy to it's fullest and I think you can't find any group of DAP owners more happy with their device than Tera Player owners.

The Tera-Player is the best sounding "scam" I have yet purchased!
I continue to be amazed that folks can criticize the performance of a product that they have not owned or auditioned.

Makes an easy target when it's rare. People are just bitter and forget the real reason we are on this site, which is to enjoy music and learn ways to enjoy it more. This is a solution to that pursuit...sucks people are so quick to criticize

No, don't confuse non-believers with dis-believers. Non-believers are open to persuasion. Incidentally if anyone wants the low-down from the horse's mouth on the supported sample rates, here's Charles explaining - http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital-line-level/223745-digital-but-not-numbers-5.html#post3265487

I wonder how many have actually HEARD (with their ears not eyes) the Tera Player with a decent headset and thinks it doesn't sound good? So far in this thread I don't believe there is even a single person.

Certainly I think it is the best portable player I've heard.

You guys will eat up pretty much anything!

So, if I understand correctly, all technical considerations are banned from this thread, and all opinions that don't stem from a listening session are banned as well! And apparently, it's entirely unreasonable to criticize Charles for claiming 24 bit support when in fact it simply crops out the lower 8 bits with no further processing!

Suit yourselves, just please don't say stupid things like "24 bit sounds so much better than 16 bit on the Tera Player!".
