Altmann Tera Player - Page 5

I am thinking about buying it because it's the only truly portable hi-end DAP. I have a HiFiMan HM-801 and it sounds really great but i can't have it always with me beacuse of it's size. I am just interested in how it will play some really heavy music like black metal.

there is no such thing as genre compatibility with dacs and daps. only with headphones and speakers. please be sensible. smily_headphones1.gif

Actually there is such issue. I heard a few DAC's which were great for classic music but sucks for metal.

I've heard my fair share of DACs, not to mention almost every DAP in existence, and I wholly disagree. normal_smile%20.gif I can imagine some DACs being anything but neutral and accentuating a certain frequency but if that's the case you're listening to an improperly built DAC. For me, a DAC's digital signal is supposed to represent the most neutral signal possible. I can always tweak this later with EQ or my headphones. A DAC is NOT a hardware EQ.

But for many of the cheaper DAC's, they will not be perfectly neutral. If, say, one had a bit of an emphasized treble, it would make metal a bit painful but be fine for classical. Improperly built? Nope. Designed to be cheap? Yes. wink.gif

You'd be amazed at how many of the more expensive DACs and DAPs are anything but neutral. A $30 Sansa Clip+ for example, measures more linear than a Hifiman HM602.

True, but when you get to the >$1k range, things tend to be mostly neutral with slight colourations. The Sansa is also a bit of miracle. rolleyes.gif

See? A linear measuring DAP doesn't have to cost... how much is the Altman? wink_face.gif

Doesn't have to cost <mumble mumble>, but the Sansa is in the minority tongue.gif

Well, if anyone decides to sell theirs, please let me know. I'm dead set on getting the Tera Player now. Just working on saving up funds right now so if someone has one for slightly cheaper I'd love to get it.

Been talking to Charles, great guy, genius too.

Hi kenman345, I suggest you request Charles to send it by courier or something faster. Mine is send by postal and have been waiting since 19 July. Waiting for a new toy is always the toughest part........mad.gif

I have to say the Tera is closer to my Leben CS300/Naim DAC home setup than I'm comfortable with. angry_face.gif
