Altmann Tera Player - Page 4

Charles recommend using Koss Porta Pro with the Tera Player on his website, and I am wondering if it is really that good as compared with other iems??    Like to hear from those who owns the Tera Player and their impression on the Koss Porta Pro.

I've never understood this.  A $50 headphone for an 840 euro player and yet that is what he recommends.

i'm intrigued to see the comparison between altmann + koss portapro vs $1000 custom IEM + cowon players

the price range is similar, but you get better comfort with CIEM + longer battery life with the cowons rolleyes.gif

I have 4 pair of non-IEM phones besides my modified Porta-Pro. (modified Sony F1, K1000, HE-6 and Smeggy Thunderpants) I have replaced the plastic perforated driver cover with a fine mesh screen and made some changes to the pads, both of which take the performance of the Koss to a higher level.

Amazingly, this humble and inexpensive phone compares very closely with my above listed phones. Of course the balanced planars and K1000 require the use of my desktop amp which drives them from the speaker terminals and uses my Tera Player as a preamp. I find the Tera/Koss combo to be as musically satisfying as the far more expensive planars. It is a mistake to underestimate the performance of the PortaPro/KSC35 when suitably modified by a few simple and easy updates.

I would call the SQ of the modified Koss closer to that of the Senn. HD-650 than most any other full sized cans that I have owned.

Addendum:

Dr Xin also used the Koss KSC35 to voice all of his amplifiers, and considered the Koss to be one of the best sounding headphones available regardless of price! Interestingly, he used them without pads.

Have anyone looked at their homepage lately?

I'm positive this is a recent addition. Does anyone have any experience with the latest version and how strong is the hi-gain output?

FYI - those headphone outputs were mentioned here in December 2011:

While the 2 headphone outputs have a slightly different SQ, there is not one that is specifically designated as a high-gain output. Rather the center output sounds like it might
have a bit of crossfeed added and has very slightly less volume. To me, it sounds best with rather bright recordings. As Charles says, just use the output that sounds best to your ears with whatever specific headphone that you are using.

If you need to drive challenging headphones that require more power than the average, you can order the v1 model rather than v0 which is standard. I find the v0 to be completely adequate for my needs.

Thanks HiFlight for sharing your findings.   My Tera Player should arrive these 2 days.   Will get the Koss Porta Pro and see how it match up.   Cheers.

Another Koss phone that works really well with the Tera Player is the KSC35. I mounted my recabled KSC35 on a headband rather than using the clips. With the headband, the Plantronics pads are very comfortable, sound great and fit perfectly. You can also use the Sennheiser PX200 pads, but I much prefer the Plantronics. Both the KSC35 and PortaPro's sound much better after modifying the perforated driver cover. The fine wire screen works very well and wasn't much harder to do than drilling the stock plastic cover. I took some pictures of my mods and will post them if I can find them.

That's not surprising as I think Koss uses the same drivers in the Porta Pro and KSC35 headphones.  I'm interested in how evolutionx will find the player although at its current price it is just a little too steep for me.  At the initial 499 I may have been tempted but 840 knocks it out of the ball park.

Not to mention a high output impedance that can't handle high-end IEM impedance loads. Cowon players have developed - finally - semi-decent outputs, but they still lag behind Apple, and in some ways, behind Sony, too. If SQ is all up to EQ, the name Cowon, the fact it's not from a Chaebol or conglomerate, then SQ the Cowon players have.

But, they work. Stick with what works.

I still have the strong feeling that someone is having a lot of fun at your expense. Your expensive expense.

Charles has a very droll sense of humor!! I doubt, however, that the waiting list is very long for the Posh Fur-ther!!!

What is the difference between v0 and v1 version? And is this player any good for heavy music such as metal?

sometimes i do think of buying this just because it is one of the expensive portable player up to date ? what was i thinking.
