Altmann Tera Player - Page 26

While I would not go so far as to say the PortaPro is perfect, I will say that after re-cabling and replacing the stock pads and stock plastic grille with fine mesh, the PortaPro's (and KSC-35) sound amazingly good, better than many phones costing hundreds of dollars more. I have done the same mods on the KSC-75 and do not find the same quality of sound as the PortaPro and KSC-35. The KSC-35 was used by Dr Xin to voice his entire line of headphone amps which were very highly regarded in their day. He, as does Charles, considered these humble phones to be his reference.

Hi HiFlight, thanks for your recommendation, the Yamaha EPH-100 sounds fantastic with the Tera-Player.    Cheers.

For those who don't care for IEM's that insert deeply, the Yuin PK1 buds also sound really fine with the T-P.

I have found through my limited time so far with it that it's a great device to feel like a non audiophile. Once it's all set up and you have the card with the music you want loaded into the Tera Player, you can easily and happily use it for hours. I use it whenever i can at school and it is nice and small so it fits in my pocket and i can use the controls without taking it out of my pocket, something i couldn't do with my old iPod rig. My iPod has been collecting dust on my night table since getting the Tera Player.

What I mean about it making me feel like im not an audiophile, i mean that its so small and simple i don't have to worry about anything. I have experienced no interference at all, which is great coming from my Pico Slim that seemed to always have interference from some of the locations I am usually in or the items I am around. I can keep the Tera Player in the pocket with my phone and it wont experience any interference that you can notice through my CIEM's. I feel at ease when I use the Tera, cause I know it's the best, if not in the top-tier, and it has no inconveniences when you're actually using it. Yes, it sucks loading on music to cards and stuff. But with my microSD card holder always in my wallet I always have tons of music on me and ready to listen to :-)

Sorry for the double post, this is something different and been a few hours.

The Sony M10 has officially been added to my wishlist. I was sitting in my class yesterday and was wishing I could just be recording everything as it was hard to follow. I also realized the M10 can record to .wav, so I can use it with my Tera Player. Hopefully I'll be able to get it soon, and then I'll not only be recording class lectures, but anything I find cool. I really wish I had it when I first got the Tera Player and was in Philadelphia. I met lots of interesting people and heard a lot of creative and original music played in a park. Guess the Tera Player  hasnt stopped me from wanting gear, just not really another DAP (though was considering getting a Colorfly C3 just to have when I dont wanna bring my Tera Player somewhere.

I am also happy to report one of my new coworkers is a DJ and has a Technics-SL1200 MK2 Vinyl Player set up to do rips, so I'm hopefully gonna get him to help me take some of my vinyls and get them on my Tera Player.

Re the Tera Player matching with the Yuin PK1, would that be the V0 or V1 tera model? The PK1's pretty hard to drive.

Thanks

I have the Tera V0 and it drives my PK1 with authority and is capable of volume much higher than my normal listening level. IMO, it is one of the best-sounding match-ups that I have heard to date. My PK1 is recabled, but that should have no effect on volume level that can be achieved.

I feel that earbuds makes the Tera Player a little less stress free to use so I'm considering the same match too having ordered a TP from Charles recently.

Tried the PK1 with an ALO RX MK3 but could only get the PK1 to really come alive at the hi setting of the amp. Otherwise I found the sound lifeless and less detailed.

HiFlight, what cable did you swap into the PK1 and was it easy to do? How did the sound change after the swap?

Thanks.

The recable was done by Yuin before I purchased the phones from a Head-Fi member. I don't recall the brand of wire. I have previously owned a PK1 with stock cables and I can't really recall a great difference in SQ. I personally prefer the PK1 over the more expensive OK1, having owned both.

I guess much would depend on how loud you listen, but I have never felt the need to run the TP anywhere near max volume when using my PK1.

Gotta give a special thanks to HiFlight. He did a wonderful job with these Koss PortaPro's I just received. Only listened to a few songs but I definitely am loving it. Can't believe these things only cost $40 stock. These definitely will be competing with my customs for play time. Listening to Florence and the Machine right now. Absolutely beautiful.

I do want to mention that I did ask HiFlight to do the modifications to them for me and we did work out a payment for his work. I just didn't feel comfortable doing it myself and I wanted someone with a T-P to do the mod so they could test them out and compare against their own set(s).

Hi all,

I've the Tera player for a few months now and I'm very happy with it. This little box sounds really good !

I use some Earsonics SM3 with it. I'm quite happy with this set up but I'd like to upgrade my headphone for something more "open".

I was thinking about buying a Grado GS1000. Did somebody already test this set up ? Is the Tera Player able to drive this headphone?

Although I have listened to the GS1000, it was not using the Tera Player, but as this headphone is quite efficient, the Tera should be able to drive it very easily.

I have the Tera Player v0 (standard) version and rarely run into a lack of output power with any of my phones, (with the exception of the K1000 and HE-6).

It sounds especially good with my modified Sony F1 which is about as open as a phone can get. The specs on my F1 are about identical to those of the GS1000.

Hi EvolutionX

I note your comments in another thread - ALO Rx MkIII, in that you have tried the source/CLAS/RxIII combo. How does it compare with the Tera Player? Care to comment on the differences in sound presentation?

I'm considering a MkIII as a pre-amp for my car line-in having used a MkII in a similar way very successfully.

Thanks.

Is there a burn in time for the TP? What happens to the sound during and after burn in?

On, BTW I'm pretty sure there is a difference between the 2 headphone sockets and it's not just the volume. biggrin.gif
