Altmann Tera Player - Page 123

I just spent one short and one long flight listening to my TP. I have never listened to headphones so long with zero fatigue. Very nice.

You have only just broken the surface. I've put hundreds of hours on mine. It's great.

I think there are Tera-Player owners in Russia, even in Moscow :)

You may be able to find them on the player.ru forum, so maybe you can have a listen ...

Charles :)

Thanks, but there are no Tera Player`s owners in Moscow city - only in St. Petersburg (422 miles from me by train)

Considering you're responding to the actually maker of the Tera Player, I would assume he'd know where he's sent his product. You know, considering he makes them all by hand and ships them himself...

Probably semi-conscious, as I'm currently in a state of bliss listening to my Tera Player and the ethereal Anonymous 4.

Andy, yet another thing in common! I have a number of their albums. They are sublime eh! Have you the Hildegard Von Bingen the Origin of fire album, truly a treasure of early music.

I bet the Terra sounds fantastic through the TU-05!

I would like to hear it with my JH13's. I have to quite coming to this thread! Maybe some day. :^) I would like one in a military grade case.

I`m ready to pay $50 to paypal right away to those who do RMAA measurements of Tera Player.

I need frequrency response & impedance and crosstalk with THD.

Thank u!

Somebody run a double blind test with the tera and a nicely amped and eqd clip +. I am of the belief that our Russian will have the final laugh.

I think it is already military grade. It has survived lawn mowers and beer bottle opening...

Yes, I have read that. I guess it could be taken that I meant it did not seem sturdy, I know it is a superior case. I guess I like the look of my iRiver with all the paint gone and a grey plated zinc left. Looks like it has gone through war but not that I like war, I have been there. I just like some things, well, utilitarian military of a sort. I must keep an eye out for this player. Someday. :^)

For example, my M9 Leica has a nice case made of brass painted black. Over time a lot of black has worn off, revealing the brass underneath. And even though the M9 is a rather expensive camera, it has a very utilitarian look now.

Received my TP last Saturday and would like to share my brief experience with TP with all Head Fiers...

IEM : Sony EX 1000

Portable Amp : ADL Stride

Reference DAP : Sony PCM D50

TP + Sony EX 1000

Initial impression

- Very detail

- Musical

- Very good high extension (very open)

- Extremely good decays

- Shape definition/imaging (front/rear/left right)

- Imbalance found...biased towards the mid-high due to insufficient lows (there are bass texture there but not up to a level/power that deliver a balance with the rest of mid and high)

Compared to Sony PCM D50+EX1000

- Sony D50 is less in all departments (10-15% difference, if you want to quantify, but that is my subjective numbers) except the lows.

-The lows, Sony D50 has strong power and thus the lows are punchy and powerful.

- Sony is less musical, subjective impression (sorry, again) but is DAP with high analytical performance.

TP + ADL Stride + Sony EX 1000

Wow, a different world.  Now the combo delivers very good balance across all spectrum.  With a hint of loss details (-5% when compared to TP/EX1000 direct).  The bass now, not only goes very deep, but the different layers and definition of bass wins hand down against the Sony D50.  Bass is now as punchy as the Sony D50 (thanks with the help of ADL's power).
I wrote to Charles to confirm if the impedance mis-match led to the above (TP+EX1000) lack of lows and he confirmed this might be the reason.

Reference  :
Back in December, I was considering buying the iRiver AK100 and had a chance test out the unit against my Sony D50 for a good 2-hour audition (thanks the shop allowed me to transfer all my songs to the AK100 for fair comparison).  I used the same set up above for comparison, either AK100+Ex1000 direct or via ADL Stride...the AK 100 lose out in all departments regardless of go direct or via ADL Stride.

Conclusion of the above :
- SQ wise TP is one level up against Sony D50
- TP could do with more power to make its performance at the lows come alive
- Owners of IEM at 32 ohms impedance might need a portable amp to exploit the full potential of the TP and by then you'd know what TP could do with your music.
- Although I have not tried out full size headphones with 60ohms, but I did try the TP with Sony Z-1000 (without the ADL) at Sony shop and the combo performed much balance from low to high.  Having said that, TP still lacks the punchiness of the Sony D50 due to lower power output in general.  This might be the compromise of a highly portable against a sizable monster.

UI
Amazingly easy to manage (only encountered once with a folder with bad file and the TP stuck with no respond, I then deleted the folder and reload and the problem was gone).

I would not say the TP is good or bad, but I would say I love it.  Again, subjective.

Very nice to see an honest +/- review based upon experience.

Probably for those who have no chance of getting an audition [pre-purchase] of TP can go to Sony shop to try out an audition on the Sony PCM D50 as a reference.  If you think the Sony is your cup of tea then TP for sure will deliver what you are looking for (especially for those who owned Cans/IEM with higher impedance).

Hope this helps.

Cheers

I have measured it.

It's exactly 5.699999999999 out of 5 on the scale of limitless ecstasy.

More than that is not allowed !!!

Just a couple femto-bliss more and this universe could easily collapse ... we don't want that to happen ...

Charles :)
