Altmann Tera Player - Page 112

I read this thread most days. I understand Skamps urge to know the measurements for the tera-player, I also
wanted to know the headphone output impedance of my Fostex hp_p1(that I own) so I could match headphones with it correctly.

I made a thread and also posted about four times in other threads requesting the information , and emailed Fostex. All to no avail. I did not want to over post or over ask in fear of being a pest. I searched the internet many times for months until I came upon a page listing tue output measurements of many devices. Lo and behold the Fostex was listed there.

I think its a fair question to ask, for specs, graphs, mesurements and the like as many companies share them selectively based on their own preferences, what they want to share, hide and promote.

For me it was a fun and frustrating search. I did my requests in a civil and restrained manner realizing that my need to know was mainly mine alone although once the results were known others might also be interested.
It measured higher than i wished for but still sounds great, but no mind i have the hifi-m8 on preorder.

The AK100 was trashed on the forums for its impedance of around 20ohm but the go-dap wasnt for its 47ohms(which the company honestly emailed me about and they can change it to 10ohm), and the ever popular ALO -what are their output measurements?

Ask a few times, wait patiently, be civil, do multiple searches, inspire others to want to know the answer also through good example.

I have found it prudent to now just ignore the naysayers and skeptics who don't realize what they are missing as I listen to my Tera sing to me. They *Just Don't Get It*! wink.gif

My gain, their loss!

You make a very good point. It reflects some of my own views that you can't just go by the numbers. Patience can also be rewarded. I don't mind Skamps want for measurements, but his denial of ever being interested in owning it and his consistent urging for measurements is dragging out, but he's not being patient with us. Why do I wanna help someone that just keeps saying the same thing and the results wont even change his mind? It's totally pointless

1) TP has the best SQ to my liking compared to DX100, AK100, Studio 3rd anniversary (being the closest to the Tera's musicality.)

2) it's true that there's impedance mismatch with some headphones / iems. Fitear TG334 being one that I feel sounded weird and off and cured with portable amps I'm using with it.

So you finally sold it?!? wow, didnt think you actually wanted to give it up. That sale was pending for a while

Reason that I sold my TP, was because I found the 3rd anniversary, which has the closest musicality to the TP and also a small screen to display my song library.

But still, from SQ alone.. TP wins hands down. It's more clean (non grainy, esp for vocals), and more musical by little margin.
Still, for me, I can't justify the $700 price difference for such a small improvement in the SQ department. Plus with all the compromises that TP has.

Been trying to find "the one" that could replace the TP.. But still, now with 3RD ANNIVERSARY I hear a audible hiss that I normally don't hear with TP...

I am sure a fan of Charles, and would buy in a heart beat if there's say a second generation of TP that offers more sensibilities to me. smily_headphones1.gif

FYI, I bought ace8888's TP and sold my 3rd anniversary. I am happy with my decision. To each his own. And for the record, I danced in my kitchen this evening.

To me, it is worth the price differential. The TP, for me, imparts an emotional connection to my music that is hard to come by, and so far has not been delivered by other systems, with the caveat I need more time with the rwak. Will I sell it in two months, who knows. All I know now is that I am doing more dancing than ever. etysmile.gif

That statement in bold, I find so true!

Btw, impedance mismatch only to be found with my tg334... Other headphone such as tralucent 1plus2, ocharaku flat 4 kaede, gr07 mk2, shure se215 se all behave normally.

Let's stay away from those evergreen measurements for a while, - what are your subjective impressions with supraaural/ circumaural cans and Tera?

I personally just adore Tera with Ed. 8 for most recordings;

still I definitely prefer T5P for classical and jazz (although the combination is a no-no for other genres).

I find DT1350 passable, but unexciting.

HD 25-II are quite involving, PRaT is not lost, possibly even emphasized by fluidity of the treble (a hint of harshness remains a niggle for me when using HD 25 II with Sansas); still in direct comparison between Ed. 8 and HD 25 the latter appear to simplify things too much.

Nevertheless HD 25 II for me remain the choice for the gym.

Unmodified PortaPro have quite a bit of initial appeal, but in a short while I'm painfully aware that their mid-bass dominates the rest, and want to go back to Ed 8.

I tried also Sony MDR V6 - not bad at all. In direct comparison to Ed. 8, I must say that V6 mids appeared recessed (vocals / presence suffered quite a bit) = don't waste your time...

Oh my goodness, yet another owner of TP with Flat4-KAEDE in addition to VZ. MuppetFace seemed to really like that and I read this review posted recently

How does that combo sound? A match "made in heaven" or what?

Circumaural phones that I own that perform very well with my v0 Tera are my modified and balanced Sony F1 (impedance 20 ohms) Detailed and expansive headstage. Very transparent with a great sense of realism. Preferred with vocals and small instrumental groups.

Shure SRH1840, balanced (impedance 65 ohms) Great sound at my normal listening levels, but maybe too demanding for those who like it LOUD. I prefer them for my classical listening. Very precise imaging.

Smeggy Thunderpants, balanced (resistance constant 50 ohms) Plenty of volume, right up there with the some of the top phones. (See Jude's review) These reach the bottom octaves effortlessly. Enjoyable for music with wide dynamic ranges.

Phones that do not work very well with my Tera:
AKG K1000: far too inefficient for other than high output desktop amplifier.
HE-6 same as K1000..require far more power than Tera is capable of delivering.
These two phones do deliver excellent SQ using the Tera as a source for my Bantam Gold Class D desktop amp. I have since sold my HE-6.

Edit: My balanced phones are used with an XLR to 1/8" miniplug adapter when powered by my non-balanced amps.

Unlike anything that I've heard before, it's the one headphone that I enjoy the most. Just pure awesomeness smily_headphones1.gif. Not sibilant to me, but highs really extend well above the rest (334 1p2 etc). Although, fit and isolation with stock tips is not good, for me at least. I use ortofon medium size and I think I needed the large, but still hasn't been able to got a pair.

Wow so the Studio V holds it own? That is quite intriguing =).
