Altmann Tera Player - Page 105

As usual, I'm in the middle of this sort of argument. I do like consistency across a wide range of associated product bit at the same time KNOW that measurements are lacking for a big picture assessment. Doesn't mean they don't count or shouldn't be reviewed but take the VG measuring clip for instance. I believe it uses the amp in the soc for output. It likely has less power per channel when both are driven due to the limited capability of the chips traces. It would also show up in the way it actively drives dynamically contrasted music signals, especially into lower impedance's. It will not show up in a steady state test but can round and soften it rhythmically while it's used for it's intended purpose. If you think that a clip+ sounds a little like that, it may be coincidence or it may be correlation. Hard to say but an amplifier is basically a controlled way to connect a power supply to a transducer. Thin tracks that resist this do so non linearly (voltage variance at different portions of the chip when power is demanded) and will degrade performance.

I just loaded up some 192/24s and they play just fine on the tera...

Meh.

Regardless of your headphones, you will recognize the Tera-Player immediately, because it lets you navigate through all your music without looking at a screen, i.e. totally blind.

Don't worry, there's just no way you can miss it ...

Okay, here's another one:

You know that you own a Tera-Player, if you can talk to the girl directly ...biggrin.gif

LOL! Not often I use the "lol" symbol, but that was surely a worthy line first thing in the morning!

Thank you for the laugh! beerchug.gif

I believe they play at 16 bit res which I think is fine for a portable. Nice that you don't need to convert everything, that is, if you use wav anyways.

Someone in this thread mentioned that they think we may not be measuring the right things when we measure equipment. Has anyone ever thought of measuring the listener? You could use subtle biofeedback to see if some kinds of music playback created more or less stress in the listener's body.

Mark Levinson did something like this back when he was promoting the Bobcat software as described a ways down this page: http://www.6moons.com/industryfeatures/he2005mh/1.html

He used muscle testing and seemed to show that regular PCM would make someone's muscle go weak, but with the Bobcat software engaged the same person's arm would be strong. Maybe someone could do some muscle tesing with the Tera Player versus another DAP. Or an even more elegant solution would be some kind of physiological biofeedback measurement such as galvanic skin response or heart rate variability that can show higher or lower levels of stress. Any biofeedback specialist/audiophiles out there?

EDIT added: I have a Tera on order and may play with muscle testing it compared to my DX100. I do not have any biofeedback equipment.

Excellent idea! I have often thought this would be a very interesting line of research. Thing is - objectivists won't like to do it because they fear what it will show and subjectivists can't be bothered because they already know what it will show.wink_face.gif
