Altmann Tera Player - Page 2

no point doing that, it will sound bad

you'll need to re rip!

Thanks KT66

Do you mean that I won't notice any improvement until I re rip them into lossless wav files?

Or even worth do you mean that it'll highlight the defaults of the MP3 (256/320) files?

Yes to both, a WAV out of a 320 file might even sound worse than the original MP3,

You can't make a Bentley out of a Austin Allegro

Surely the whole point of having the Altmann is that you only listen to uncompressed to the best uncompressed files you can get.

Ok I understand. So I'll have to re rip all my music ...

My source is currently an iPhone 4 and I'd like to upgrade it to go with my new SM3 V2 (with earmolds).

First I thought about buying an amp but I'd like to get a small system.

This tiny player seems to have only one functionality but at least it seems to do it correctly...

Thanks KT66 for your help wink_face.gif

Yup, I have an album in 320 converted to WAV and it doesn't sound very good on the Tera. Gotta go with at least FLAC to WAV, or ideally WAV all the way.

So how does the Tera perform with CIEM's? Is their any hiss?

Using IEMs, no hiss here. Just pure bliss.

@vert: When you say "it doesn't sound very good", do you mean, as KT66, that the result is lower than with a standard source such as an iphone?

It's all relative. You're not going to have the distortion that you do with an iPhone, but once you've heard WAV on the Tera, there's no going back to 320. It would be only for casual listening.

Ok thanks for your answer. wink_face.gif

This little player seems to be very interesting. But it's very hard to find it used... Where did you find yours, vert?

Found it on here. Though I can't imagine too many will come up since there aren't that many owners out there. I still can't believe the guy sold his to me.

Yes for sure!

I'll have to wait for one now...!

Thanks for your information

So how does the DX100 compare with this? You know this question will definitely come your way tongue.gif

While the Tera-Player and DX100 are about total opposites when comparing features and capabilities, the bottom line when considering only the SQ of both players using .wav files, the Tera wins with a purity of tone and spatial qualities that put it ahead of any player that I have owned. It also sounds superb when using phones that many would consider less than audiophile quality, whereas the DX100 scales up when using more expensive and challenging phones. The DX100 has considerably more output power than does the Tera v.0 which I own.

I don't mean to take anything away from the DX100 as it is a stunning achievement, but for those willing to sacrifice lower cost, flexibility, features and power output for the ultimate in SQ, the Tera-Player is, IMO, about as good as it gets.

That said, I think that the DX100 will, over time, have a far broader appeal and have a much larger potential market than will the Tera-Player.
