It didn't live up to my expectations for its price point. I really didn't feel it offered me anything over my Studio V 3rd ANV with my 1Plus2 IEMs and that it was a downgrade in respects to sound quality/synergy. Not saying this would be the case on IEMs across the board (as the Studio V is a picky DAP in finding a match) but with this pairing, definitely...

It's kinda disappointing, I've heard some uninspiring things about the AK100, now the RWAK100 too? Guess my interest is now just focused on hearing it for myself, if I ever think about buying one. I was hoping maybe it would be a good complement to go with the Tera, when I want a screen and when I don't. Maybe I'll find someone with one and take a listen, but it just seems like bad news from a lot of people I respect the opinions of.

I reported this back in the AK 100 forum back a couple of months.

I spent 2 hours comparing my Sony PCM D50 with the AK100 and found it was a big gap between the two.  Of course the D50 is not a practical portable player with its size and weight. However, it is one decent player should you staying home for private listening.  After this audition, I decided to looking elsewhere for a DAP and now awaiting the Tera from Charles.

Cheers

Hi Guys,

I'm the proud user in Hong Kong.

Anyone could PM me if wanting for an audition.

My first customer is my wife, she wants to have one of her own as soon as she listened for an evening.

I normally play TP in my car as well as my main system, it's comparable to EMT 982 cd player.

My project is to transfer lots of vinyls and records into digital form, music of good old days deserve preservation.

So, can you please describe the "big gap between the two". I can't tell which you think sounded better.

Sorry if I missed your previous post.

Hi
The Sony offers much better definition in terms of sound stage, imagining and the sense of voice, instruments. AK 100 sound stage is mute and narrow and comparatively lifeless...this was tested with my Sony MDR EX1000 with and without the ADL Stride results while using the same files.

Hope this helps.

I just extracted 96KHz *.WAV files from this Blu-ray Audio disc:

http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Final_Fantasy_Orchestra_Album

http://www.amazon.com/Fantasy-Orchestral-Blu-ray-Limited-Edition/dp/B009VK4ROA

As usual this tool called eac3to did the job just fine and even got an option to strip 24-bit down to 16-bit properly:

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=125966

Originally the files came in the common *.M2TS format and I could play those extracted *.WAV files with VLC Player on Windows 8 successfully.

Verified that no meta data / tags etc. could be found at all.

Is there anything else to try? Such an awesome album and I would love to make everything working for Tera-Player.

Thanks a lot.

You're having trouble playing it on the Tera Player? Weird static/white noise for a few seconds? Have you tried a different card?

Any TP owner coming to Canlanta this may?

Thanks a lot for your reply.

Well, just tried a better 32GB Class 10 card but still no dice. Put both cards in Colorfly C4 and they were giving me "Play Error" as well.

No issues with Redbook stuff (44.1/16 *.WAV files) stored on the same cards whatsoever. Even tested 96/24 in addition to 96/16 but still not making a difference.

Really not much could be posted for further troubleshooting except for log files like this:

eac3to v3.27
command line: eac3to.exe "..\FINAL FANTASY ORCHESTRAL ALBUM\00019.m2ts" 2: 20.wav -down16
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
M2TS, 1 video track, 1 audio track, 1 subtitle track, 0:04:41, 60i /1.001
1: h264/AVC, 1080i60 /1.001 (16:9)
2: RAW/PCM, 2.0 channels, 24 bits, 96kHz
3: Subtitle (PGS)
[a02] Extracting audio track number 2...
[a02] Reading RAW/PCM...
[a02] Swapping endian...
[a02] Reducing depth from 24 to 16 bits...
[a02] Writing WAV...
[a02] Creating file "20.wav"...
[a02] The original audio track has a constant bit depth of 24 bits.
[a02] The processed audio track has a constant bit depth of 16 bits.
Video track 1 contains 8411 frames.
eac3to processing took 11 seconds.
Done.

that is hardly the case, at least those that had less than great things to say about the RWAK publically...let's not forget people here have been prone to lumping the AK and RWAK together....this is a big oversight....akin to doing the same with iPod/iMod...there are significant sonic difference between the two...

IIRC lee was one of three or four in the AK100 thread here that prioritized certain sonic characteristics many other owners/reviews didn't, thus eagerly voicing how the RWAK didn't meet their needs ;-)....granted the RWAK may not quite be the pinnacle of hi-fi....for portable use it is sonically more than just good, in addition to the other tangibles that make it a great, albeit high priced, DAP...

sorry for interruption, back to you regularly scheduled bias, prejudice and dogma... :-P

I've read up on the AK100, I've seen from a few people I respect their comments on the RWAK100, I have merely remarked that it looked at first to have potential but at this point I'd never buy one without first hearing and testing the version I buy. It was an interesting venture for a new DAP out there, I like the size and dual microSD slots. I'd be able to take all my music around. But again, after what I've heard about it, I'd have to try it first. Unlike with the Tera Player where I had read up on it and appreciated what it had to offer and what people I have talked to one on one about audio had to say about it. That's how I made my decision, that's how I make most of my decisions. I feel like a lot of people on the forums end up finding a fellow few head-fier's that have a similar perception of audio as them and they may help you develop your knowledge in the field as well, but it's those people that I have felt a link to audibly that I usually find out their opinions on devices before purchase.

fair enough....to each their own...

i for one (and many others) would not even give the TP the slightest consideration considering in my mind the glaring deficiencies that have already been shared by many...

to those obsessed with gleaning that last 5-10% of SQ, i commend your passion but question your common sense... wink.gif

While I get that you're skeptical, common sense goes out the windows after your first post here (on Head-Fi). And so does any spare cash in your wallet
