How about Monoprice 8323?

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10823&cs_id=1082302&p_id=8323&seq=1&format=2

Well within your budget, and gets some great reviews.  Here's one from Steve Guttenberg:

Highly regarded here at head-fi too.

Anyone know if there's velour pads that will fit?

the thing is..i don't want hifi headphones. and my other chagrin with what hifi is how it's site reviews are very short and not deep. basically short and sometimes makes you thinik of a shabby website.

what hifi is not a shabby website it's a professional magazine they are like the steve guttenberg of england and they wouldn't go anywhere near sony xbass..you are saying that you don't want hifi headphones but the sonys are hifi headphones?

a magazine, that makes more sense now.

Wait what? I don't necessarily need audiophile hifi coveted headphones that are basically studio accurate representation. Studio accurate representation of most songs I personally listen to is like nails on a chalkboard if you knoww hat i mean. What about the last part "but the sonys are hifi headphones?" can you elaborate on what you mean. the XB's are of course not hifi :P any silly goose can see that. :)

I wouldn't call XB series High Fidelity or audiophile coveted. I already have heapdhones worth listening too. I need something for a specific kind of music that heapdhones worth listening to sound terrible on bc the people that made the music mastered it ...pretty badly

i didn't mean that in a bad way it's just the way it come across.. it's just that the akg450s are your best bet..they sound good with all music and have got the bass you are looking for and are portable and comfortable at the same time..they sound like grados but with a deep bass..the koss are supposed to be good.. i have seen quite a lot of people on the tube with them headphones so they must be good..and they will be in budget?

portapro's. HD202 MK11 are not what I am looking for, the reviews on the bass and comfort on those are the opposite of what i am looking for

I know of those headphones, they never came to thought..but the problem again is testing and comfort, some users have problems on clamping and what not. the pads dp\on't look like they are comfortable, and they like any hifi review on bass wihtout key words i am looking for, odn't mean much to me. The HFI 580's are said to have more bass punchiness and everything than porta pro's. heck i even EQ the bass with a +14dB (a lot) and it's still just enough so i doubt the punchy articulate bass of the HD651 is what i am looking for...bigger problem with these is that i won't be able to test them. they are cheap though :/ but at that range i would buy a heapdhone in that range as a present, and for that range, the DH202 MK2 and JVC HA700 pop up again and that's an audio gift for hi fi beginners too
