I am less familiar with the HD600 but from my limited experience I can hear that it is a good reference point for the 250-250s :-).

The HD650s were my 1st serious can after the PX100... Lol. I have heard them through many many different setups. Compared to the 250-250s, to me, the 650s are mainly less of most attributes including detail in the treble clarity/tightness of bass and clarity/positioning of vocals and general placement accuracy, maybe even layering/depth (for less than half the price new in the UK). I would concede that the 650s are less likely to offend in the treble region but through a good DAC and my consonance valve amp, this is only very occasional.

I will give them a fresh comparison but if someone had put the 250-250s in the same region as the HD 650s, they would very likely not have made my short list!

The only other can I know that I would offer as a comparative reference (though less so than the HD600) is the Shure SRH940, especially in mid and treble. Soundstage and bass are clearly different shades if not different primary colours vs the Beyers though.

I am a hearty fan of the 250-250s though it took some courtship time to fully feel the love. In their balance, they are very very unusual, in a good way! I'm sceptical of frequency charts because of the measurement system issues but I would not be surprised if over time they prove to be more balanced than even say the HD800 which I find honest (in a good way).

I'd be really interested to hear about other relevant reference cans for the 250-250s - they would be on my next short list :-)

I'm curious about the 250 ohm version but don't really feel the need to get it since I am more than happy with the 80 ohm version.  I also only have an Essence STX and an mp3 player and I don't think they would be good enough for the 250 ohm version. Has anyone compared the HD598 to the DT250? I'm looking for an easy to drive open phone with a similar sound but don't want to spend extra for an amp with the HD600.

The Essence STX is perfectly fine for the 250 Ω version, more so in fact than for the 80 Ω one.

I have to agree with the consensus that the 250-250 is much more balanced than the 250-80, bass not so pronounced, treble, extended and sweeter, these marry really well with my setup, and - for the price are considered by me as a virtual steal :)

 

These, when burnt in, will seriously upset the HD800 apple-cart for a 'tonally' enjoyable listen...

The HD800 is already preceded by headphones that still hold their own in certain aspects. I guess the DT250 is one of those...

Interesting. Still not sure about using them with mp3 player and I don't think I would want both of them. 

I think the 250-250s struggle to compete with HD800 on quite a few aspects (detail, placement, separation) but frequency balance may well be one that it does. Timbal accuracy would be an interesting comparison.

Agreed, technically inferior for sure (I wouldn't sell my HD800s just because I have the 250-250!!) - just an enjoyable listen when all you want to do is chill out...

I would agree with that. I find them more sensitive than most to any part of the chain.

For the money they are amazing value. If isolation was closer to HD25 levels they would make the best all-rounder with the right portable amp :-). I would recommend them for many but not all uses.

I have been reading through this thread, and it seems that (more-so than the Dt770) the DT250 takes a huge swing towards neutrality at 250 ohms. Since they are still being produced in significant volume, I do wonder why Beyer never made a 600 ohm version, à la DT-770/880/990? 

 

 

following the same pattern, an even higher-ohm-rated DT250 could be market shattering in its performance.

... and require a 'suitable' amp to realise that performance benefit with a challenge to maintain the tonal balance. :-)
