(Hope this is the right place - I didn't really see a headphone parts forum...)

 

So I have a battered old pair of CD3000s and one of the drivers has gone. While the made-by-bacteria Sony drivers do seem good and I like the sound, as an owner of some Thunderpants it struck me that the acoustically dead cups and angled arrangement might make them an excellent foster home for some planar drivers.

 

So, I'm looking for some round orthodynamic drivers, ~50mm in diameter - the CD3K drivers are 50mm with no tabs poking out and I would like to fit the new drivers into the existing housing if possible, as shown here.

 

Has anyone tried this? There's this old thread which suggests some success with 55mm Yamaha HP-1/YH-1 drivers, but there are also the 46mm Yamaha HP-2/YH-2 ones which might fit in the housing better - and the older round Fostex T20RP drivers, which I think are 45mm. As luck would have it, the YH-1000 apparently uses 50mm drivers beyersmile.png but I guess I wouldn't brutalize one of those evil_smiley.gif

 

Of course I would be interested in the whole donor phones too as long as the price is right... and if all else fails, a Sony CD3000 driver would be great smily_headphones1.gif

Just wanted to say I really hope you manage to acquire some Ortho drivers for those CD3Ks. If and when you do, will you kindly share your experience implanting them?  I'm sure there are many of us who would love to hear how that goes! 

 

I also happen to own some Thunderpants, and I used to own (for a few months anyway) a set of CD3Ks, so I can certainly relate to what you're looking to do.  My instinct tells me you're right indeed about them being a good place to house Ortho drivers.  If I had a spare set of T50RP drivers I'd probably let you have them for free just to find out whether they work well in the CD3K housing.  That said, I hope you find some and your mod bears fruit!

Thanks for the kind words! If I do get this sorted, I will certainly report back. I'm glad you have the same intuition about the housing, reinforces my desire to do it.

 

The T50RP drivers (the modern ones anyway) are square are wouldn't fit in the angled slot, but the older T20RP (aka T20v2) and I *think* T40RP are round and could work. Anyway, I'm updating the post title to reflect more descriptively what I'm looking for.

I've got a already disassembled TDS-5M, with drivers ready for transplant.  

They're 55mm, almost an exact clone of the YH1 ,but with bass.

I am also very interested in obtaining a pair of 45mm orthodynamic drivers.

The Sawafuji drivers are too small and there seems to be no other NEW options available.
