Amping for AKG Q701 - Page 24

Anyone tried Q701 with Little Dot 1+?

I guess I'll just piggy back on this thread as my question's related. I just ordered a Q701 and I would love advice on amping. I currently have a X-Forte, but randomly, it gives out terrible audio distortion and so I'm thinking of getting an STX to replace it. I'll be mostly using the Q701 for games, but it'll be seeing music/movies as well. I've heard that the amp in the STX isn't strong enough to power the Q701, so what's a good amp to add to support it? Otherwise, would it be better to get a soundcard that doesn't amp very well (but has a good DAC), and just add an amp to that instead? Wouldn't adding an amp to the STX waste the amp on the STX and, thus, waste the money spent there?

The STX actually does a pretty good job at amping the Q701....you just need to turn it to high gain.

I would give it a try before you buy an amp.

I would have started a new thread but it's still related to the topic. I have an M-Audio Fast track C400 coming out of my iMac. I recently bought the Q701s (I've started messing around with music production in Logic and need a sense of what my music is actually sounding like). I had incorrectly assumed that the C400 would be enough to amp the headphones and to be honest, I didn't even realize that the headphones would require anything else other than plugging them in to the C400 (live and learn). So now, after reading this thread, I realize that I need a headphone amp. Most people in this thread seem to be going from the audio source (computer or whatever) straight to the headphone amp. I'm hoping to get some advice on running the headphone amp off of the C400. I'm not even sure if I should be running the amp from the 2 output of the C400 or right out of it's headphone jack (different connections to deal with). Anyone familiar with the C400?

Just got these... and the e10 is somewhat disappointing with these headphones. (when I first got it, i preferred the sound of my computer by its self, over using the amp) I tried the dt880's last week and it sounded great on the e10.....

Q701 is better than K701 on POP

I have a question regarding Q701 and O2 amp dac combo. Should I use it with gain on or off? It seems I get a tiny bit of distrortion on certain areas with it on. At first I thought it improved SQ but now I'm not so sure... The gain increases voltage right? How does this affect everything? Does it change anything other than volume in practice? I think there is enough power with gain off already so better keep it off so no distortion? Or am I completely clueless? :D

I don't remember how much the gain gives more voltage but something along the lines of 6-10V.
