You've 'talked' your product Up a heck of a lot, Fang, and along the way, implied that competing products use inferior approaches.

 

In short, you have a lot of your own talk to live up to.

 

I, and others, will be watching with interest to see what (eventually) turns out to be real and what turns out to be hyperbolic vapour.

 

As I've said a number of times, if the 901 turns out to be as good as you claim it to be, I'll seriously consider opening my wallet; it's just that until this thing really enters the marketplace, it's just a fantasy paperweight.

 

For all it's faults, the DX100 remains a fabulous-sounding single-box portable player. I respect it for that. It's real and it sounds great. When I have the cash to spare, I'll almost definitely be buying another one. A real fabulous-sounding player (even one with bugs & quirks) trumps a fantasy-perfect player every time, no contest.

People say the same thing about the Tera Player, that has an amazing SQ. Mind you i had DX100 for a whole month before i sold it, the SQ was beautiful but the player wasn't perfect.But if Hm-901 turn to be even better without the pop up sound i will buy one.Also iRiver AK100 might be good enough for the money, time will tell..

Actually musicday that pop sound you are referring to has been greatly reduced. So much so that I don't worry about unplugging before turning on the unit and there is no pop sound when turning off. Plus the sound is much better than originally and the UI is nearing perfection IMO (imbedded album art, and tags work).

Thank you for that, sold mine few months ago, didn't knew that the pop sound is nearly gone.Well done iBasso.Still waiting to see if iRiver comes with better SQ for the money or Hifiman.

I won't say it's nearly gone but reduced enough where it won't hurt your ears on power on with IEMs. I'm also not worried about damaging my IEMs or my ear drums anymore :). The pop is still there but IMO its actually less than the pop on Hifiman 601 which also hurt my ears. So basically its acceptable. But when you turn the unit off there is no longer any pop. So I'm wondering if they can somehow apply that to when powering on the unit as that would mean basically no pop period.

I don't understand what he said about using 1 ES9018. Did he say it's too dry and "brittle"? Someone needs to lend him a DX100 because that's not the case at all. They obviously didn't do enough tests.

I like how all these new products are vastly more expensive. Who's valuing these products? Profit margins must be through the roof. Unfortunately that's a common trait amongst most audio companies.

I also like how he thinks auto levelling features are just for car audio systems lol. More features & convenience = not hi fi?

A simple butterworth filter (like the one he's implemented) should do the trick to get the 'house sound'. It's just a matter of equalization. Doesn't require two 16-channel DAC's. From my experience with the DX100's changing sound through different firmware, it's seems like you need good software to get the ES9018 to sing, not multiples of the chip. Quality (or rather software optimization) over quantity.

I have spent a lot of time with the HM801 and in the end the strongest notion I came away with was that it was poorly designed. I'm not criticising the DAP purely on the youtube video. My collective experience with the HM801, HM601, HE500's, Head-direct and Fang and his comments and design choices form the basis of my criticism. Maybe you should read Fang's posts earlier in this thread to get an idea of what myself and others are talking about. Not that I'd expect you to change your mind.

I could care less about the bickering. Just can Hifiman truly deliver instead of the hype-train derailing as usual? I value real-world results instead of biased opinions. If this product will school ibasso then by all means I look forward to it. I love upgrading. However I'm not really looking for a side-grade....

Biased opinions (can it be any other way?) based on history. I hope they get it right as well. I'm just not hopeful based on what they've done in the past.

I'd like for this DAP to do as well as it can. Competition is healthy. However, I dislike hype in general and sometimes people deserve criticism for what they've done and said instead of stead-fast defending. I think people should think more of the community instead of the manufacturers profit margin. I know sponsors advertise on this site however open discussion should still be encouraged.

I can't argue with you there. Competition is always good for the Customers as is open-minded discussions.
