Also looking forward to direct comparisons to the HM-801 and DX100. However I can't imagine anyone making a new top model which isn't better than the old one. nc8000 (head-fi'er) rates the SQ of the Colorfly C4 higher than DX100 and then the 801 to be even better than the C4. If this is so, the 901 will be the best sounding DAP in the world. But of course these things are subjective and depends on synergy with the earphones / headphones, music genres and sound preferences etc.

Yep also I bet you he listened to the DX100 when it didn't have 1.1.7 firmware. I was literally gonna sell my unit before that firmware was released and it changed everything. Tupac now owns the DX100 and the Hifiman 801 and now prefers the DX100 to it. Plus his unit isn't fully burned in. There is also someone who preferred the Studio V to the C4. So YMWV.

Looks like there will be a delay in the release. Advertisement for HM901 on head-direct website has been removed.
It appears like the 801 is back in stock (at Head Direct) which could point to a continuation - maybe even after the 901 is on the market.

BTW to the OP / threadstarter:
This thread should be renamed to 901 instead of 802, right?

801 with complete redesign would be win. The UK chips are just that good.

will this accept an external lineout to an amp, without the dock?

It would probably need a LOD.

Another update: HM901 will support WiFi streaming, as there is a reserved WiFi bay on the side.

this thread should be moved to another section, it does not sound like its aimed at the portable market at all!

It's not aimed at any market until it's actually released, for real to the public.

Hifiman have kept us in the dark about this all along. Then Fang started making insinuations about how inferior he considers the technical approach of other products (hint: DX100) to be (e.g in terms of method of volume control) in comparison to the HM 901, but it's very easy to talk about the supposed superiority of a product that is nowhere near release, in comparison to a product that IS in the hands of customers, for real.

Frankly, I am thoroughly unimpressed with the whole drawn-out debacle.

HM901 is actually very close to be released. Well, at least they already said it will be in another month or so. The delay was caused by a last minute switch of the original scroll-wheel part with another brand. They already showcased fully functional HM901 since late last month in China and actually just has a press event in Taiwan a few days ago where they let people try the player (with the old scroll-wheel) out.

That's been his style since hifiman. lol

But I have to agree that the control of dx100 has been to a disappointment to me. But the sound makes up for it.

Well if the sound is on par with the DX100 and a fully functioning UI without bugs. I'd be all game at $900 :). But we got a lot of "ifs" so far. Can they deliver? Now at $1250 lol. It better sound significantly better than the DX100 and be fully functioning. :P For some strange reason the UI kinda reminds me of Rockbox...
