line out dock is a cable. it is generally for ipods. the name itself is general but it also..implies for use with ipods as other devices either don't have an LOD or just have an Line out..not all. walkamns also have an LOD by fiio now

im going to assume u have an ipod:

in your ipod or portable media player you have an DAC and an amp. The DAC in your ipod is good and clean but the amp isn't. the amp muddies up the signal and adds distortion(higher volumes), hiss, noise and artifacts to the signal. What an LOD does is it bypasses the amp and internal headphone jack circuitry giving you a dirrect line from the DAC into your external amp. a LOD does not amplify. it is the bridge that connects the clean analog signal from the DAC and sends it to your external amp. you NEED to use an external amp with an LOD as since you bypaseed your internal amp..you now need an amp.

some LOD's have built in amps..by FiiO, you don't realy need to look at those.

amps amplify. lod's by themselves do not.

here is a video

yes. but remembr. some things don't require an amp or LOD. many newbies may not even need one really. but yes, if you have already decided on or have the hardware and just want to know info on amps and LOD's for your ipod. yes for best results. you would need an amp and LOD. the LOD's are only $10 so it's not bad at all. i wont' retype everything as teh video and my above post already explains what an LOD does.

any specific questions?

And does the LOD work for a iPhone? So and LOD does improve the sound.... But does not amplify the wave signal right?

The L1, L3,L9, and L10 Line Out Dock's by FiiO are designed and made for use with more or less all Apple devices. So yes, it does work with  iPhone.

An LOD improves teh sound yes, but what it is really doing is it is giving you the signal AS IT SHOULD BE (to an extent) as it's getting it straight from the DAC of the ipod. No, the LOD does not do any amplification or anything. The FiiO E1 is just an LOD AND amp built into one, do not get confused.

Any other questions?L3000.gif Feel free to ask, even if i said it above, if you don't get anything, ask away.

So what's the difference between all the different models of the LOD? And does that mean that all the fiio e-series is both a LOD and and amp? Example the E6 or E7 or E17

The L3,L9 use high quality HPC 22 W wire inside it. the L1 does not. the difference after that is shape and cable size. teh L9 is for if you like to only just use it with a portable amp..fiio usually. the L3 is if you want to plug your ipod with LOD into a desktop amp or other thing, the straight cable makes it easy, and if your amp has an AUX in in a weird place and not on the bottom, the L3 will reach easier. the L10 does not use HPC22w wire. im not sure of the quality of that cable but the L10 is usually for cars or for a dedicated in home use where you plug your ipod into a system

ONLY the FiiO E1 is an LOD and amp all in one. the L series are FiiO's Line out dock's. The E series are their amp's(and amp additions) the E6 is just an amp, E7 is an amp and DAC and E17 is also an amp and DAC but a level up from the E7. these are all portable, but can also be used at home or as a dedicated device or both. the E9 and it's other lookalike variatns are desktop models only

So how does the L1 amp fare against the E6 or E7?

the E1 against E6 and E7? the L1 is the cable. the E1...is not good, it's just a volume booster really and has LOD function. I have E5, not E6 . I have E17, not E7. But they say the E7's amp section is basically the E6. the E7's main thing is a DAC remember this. it's mainly for use with a computer as a external sound card but can also serve portably as an amp or portable external sound card. E6 is just a portable amp. E17 does everything under the rainbow.

There is no amp in teh L1. the L1 is just an LOD. the E1 is the LOD and amplifieer. and for how it compares. read my above answer. keep your questions comming. don't feel like you're bothering me. i can see you are confused. gs1000.gif
