This isn't really a hard, set in stone rule, but I find that a lot of the CDs I purchased in the 90s had more dynamic range than a lot of stuff I purchased in the last ten or so years, especially the Rock stuff.

Compression and bad mastering is nothing new, a lot of the vinyl I have from the 70s and 80s is poorly mastered, i.e. dyanamic range compression, too much treble, rolled off low bass in an attempt to cut the vinyl a bit "louder".
