i own a pair of sennhieser hd 25 1-iis and want to connect them to my ps3 in a way which will get the best stereo sound quality.

im in the uk and I'm thinking so far of a stereo amplifier with headphone input but wondered if there are more portable or cheaper alternatives that offer same results

thanks

you can maybe try a usb soundcard, if not, then having your ps3 hooked up to your home surround sound receiver with a headphone output will work. THats what i have at my house, so on days when my girl is complaing about the volume, i just plug in my headphones to my receiver and its all good!

A USB sound card won't work because the PS3 doesn't support required software to install the drivers. You're on the right idea by using a stereo amplifier connecting your headphones to that which will give you the best results however not so portable. The only solution I can suggest is buying a Fiio E5 connecting it to the RCA cables from the multiout on your PS3. To do so you will need an extra cable (male RCA to 3.5mm headphone jack) and joiner (female RCA joiner) to make the connection between the E5 / red & white RCA outputs. But it could be done for quite cheap if you source the parts on ebay.

Edit: After a quick search here's what you need as mentioned above. Using this will eliminate the other cable.

1x Fiio E5 / E6 amp.

1x adapter.

Connected using the Multiout on your PS3. That's the cheapest portable solution and should give impressive results.

I guess you need to provide more info. How do you have your ps3 hooked up to your tv? I also have a usb headset that i used on my ps3 and it worked just fine. I would say try this out and see if it works

If not then on to the next idea!

thanks for all the quick replies

the fiio and cables suggestion seems like it might degrade audio quality.

i could try a stereo amp via rca cables or an av receiver via optical out and i wonder is there any difference in audio quality

when only using the headphones.

i had wondered if there was a such a thing as an headphone amp that connected to the ps3 via rca or optical

I believe to get the best quality is to have your ps3 hooked up to a nice receiver via hdmi cable and then your headphones plugged in to your receiver.

There are a number of headphone amp/DACs that take an optical input. The Fiio E17 is one of the latest ones out there - see this brief post from a user who's successfully used it with his PS3: post #1490

The Fiio E17: http://www.fiio.com.cn/product/index.aspx?ID=41&MenuID=020301

Alas the E17 is just a little less than 1.5 months old so it's hard to find right now. Should be more widely available by mid-March. Another option if you're interested in possibly doing some 5.1 gaming over headphones is the Astro A40 mixamp:
