audio gd NFB 12.1 Mac USB problem and SPDIF noise

Hello.

 

Received my NFB 12.1 last week. Here we go...

 

Can't get it to properly utilize USB from my standard issue 2010 MacBook Pro without artifacts and distortion. Cables are good. In Audio MIDI settings I have played around with changing the output (44khz, 96khz, 16/24, etc.) but it still comes through sounding like a cheap voice shifting effect with aliasing. 

 

The USB works fine through my HA INFO98 amp. Plug and play.

 

I will get a toslink cable today and see what happens.

 

Also, I use the unit as a preamp with a CD Player via SPDIF and it outputs a loud burst of white noise crackle through headphones or speakers whenever the CD play button is pushed. I tried it with a second player and the same thing occurs. It is not the cables - I tried many. Both players also work noise free with the HA INFO.

 

Any ideas appreciated. This is a quirky unit to be sure. I just need to be certain it is screwy before I risk returns costs.

I have read of this type of issue several times with various USB DAC's (beyond AGD) and it almost always comes down to how your sound it setup in your computer- disable internal sound cards, set the sample rates to match what the NFB12.1 can handle, rebooting, etc. Some research will give you a more complete answer than what I can provide.

I've been digging in the forums but haven't found anything specific yet. I'll take out agd as a term...

 

Turns out it works perfect with toslink. But I will keep trying to figure out the USB issue.

 

I'm more concerned about the noise burst the cd players cause. Kingwa thought it might be that there's less than .5V on the coax, and I'll test that when I get a chance. The players are standard, but old.

 

If anybody else has run into a coax noise issue when using older CD players, please let me know.
