Newbie gear advice

Hi fellow head-fiers,

since I'm travelling a lot for business lately, I would like to setup a small gear in order to listen good music while I am spending the night in a hotel room. Reading few threads on this forum, this component came in to my mind:

-iPod classic 250gb as source (in order to store lossless files)

-Fiio E11 Headphones amplifier

-Superlux HD662 headphones

I mainly listen to surf and classic rock, rockabilly, blues and jazz.

This setup is relatively cheap and (as I hope) still retains good quality. Would you like to suggest anything else? Would you change some components? I really wouldn't like to spend a fortune on headphones for the moment since I may switch back to earbuds if full size cans are too uncomfortable to bring around.

I know that HD668 from Superlux are getting a general better reputation here, but I really would like closed decks headphones in order to listen to my music discretely even when I am on train or airplane.

Thank you in advice.

The quality dock cable like ALO 22AWG, 18AWG SXC or pure Copper with better AMPs like P51 Mustang, iBasso T5, PB2, ALO MKII will improve the soundquality and if add better sounding headphones in the chain then overall sounquality will improve much more.

not 250 GB's. 120GB's for $220 :P I remember reading that the 662B's were very similar to my Shure SRH440's. and i gotta say, it does it well. for jazz i like my ultrasone's better as it has a more closed, less analytical and colorful sound but the Shure's still perform admirably.

like ZARIM said but i will post in layman's terms as you probably don't know what teh heck he is talking about. he wants you to get an LOD. i do too. however he is recommending some pretty expensive ones. most people will do fine with an FiiO L9 or L3 or L10. don't get L1. it's your choice which one you want to choose. what this does is it will bypass the ipods internal amp and allow you to send a clean analog signal straight from the DAC into your external amp of choice, in this case the E11. it's highly recommneded here...why is it highly recommneded..cuz it's $10....

i also have the E17 which is very similar to the E11 they say. i've never heard teh E11 so i can not tell you how or why but i can only guess as i keep hearing everyone and every reviewer say it's similar..which it should be as it's both by fiio. the E17's amp portion rocks very very well with my SRH440. a bit of an overkill but it provides the seperation, tonality and volume i want and need from my Shure's :D CLEIOS just posted an sub $100 amp shootout. E11 is in top place so i guess that is why you choose it. it has replacable batteries. when buying off Amazon be sure to not just buy the E11 by itself. There are bundle deals for same price. get the wallcharger and battery pack deal :D it's so much better. most people say thye love battery with E11...i can see why and wish i had that in my E17

i have quite a few ipods and love them. ive heard teh classic but it's been a while.

Thank you for all your answer guys :)

1) About the  250gb ipod, I was wrong, I actually meant 160gb (that costs about 250€). The 120gb model was discontinued I guess.

2) About the internal amp bypass cable I could easilly get the Fiio L3 or the L10 that seems to be reasonably priced.

3) About the headphones, I was going with Superlux since I understood from this forum that they are quite good for their price.

The 669 are fine since they are even cheaper than 662, but if you suggest to go with another brand which will be good in your opinion?

Thank you again

For the price I like Superlux.

I liked to sound from my HD-668B, which broke after less then two month (more like lost 95% of the sound).

I also own the Samson SR850C (semi-open, made by Superlux), which is one of the best bang for the buck headphones in the world.

Audiohipster has good prices on Superlux,, also check ebay.
