Out of interest. What dap are you guys running with your Merlin's and how are you finding the combo?
I currently have a note 3 and a JDS c5d via otg. Just wondering if it is worth getting a dedicated dap.
Kinda sick of my battery always being low on my phone haha

I'm running mine out of either:

iPod Video connected via LOD to an ALO Audio 'The National'
or
iPhone 5 using the Onkyo app

Both setups sound great. The iPod has a 120gb SSD drive so can hold loads of music but the iPhone is great for on the go,

How is the C5D?

I'm using a Fiio X3 - Its a nice sounding combo. I used to use them out of my phone (s4) but it had some low level background noise that bugged me. They were also good out of a rockboxed Clip Zip until that got lost!

Nice.

The C5D is awesome actually.  Very transparent.  Doesn't take anything away from the recording but doesn't really add any flavor to it either.  Apart from the bass boost feature, which I am yet to really use other than a few times to see how much of a boost it was.

It has 3 settings, off, x boost and xx boost (I dont know the +db).  Though the first step doesn't seem to impact the mid bass too much, I am not a huge fan, as for the 2nd step, it gets very boomy.
That being said, if you had bass lean headphones, then it could be of use.

I haven't tried it with the Merlin's as I am still waiting on mine.  I have tried it with Bushmill X Grado's, Re400, HD650, Alessandro MS-Pro and it sounds great with all of the above, though obviously not going to get amazing results with the HD650 and Alessandro's compared to a dedicated desktop setup :)

Hope this helps.

Oh it is also just plug and play with my Note 3.  Standard audio players work etc.

Just chiming in to say that I am now a proud owner of one too, bought the universal from a member here.

I also have Rooth LSX5 universal, which is also 5-driver hybrid, I thought the sound would be somewhat similar between the two (based on their FR) but in fact, both of them have quite a big difference in signature

Congratulations.
Would you care to elaborate on how they compare?

in short, transparency, details, imaging, and separation are similar, and as good as each other, too early to tell until I have some time to do detailed review...

...but in general, Merlin is warmer, smoother treble, though the mid is a little recessed compared to LSX5.

On the other hand, LSX5 is more energetic, sparkly treble, bass impact is slightly harder, and soundstage is more 3D than Merlin (Merlin has a big soundstage, but vocals are more in the head)

Awesome!

Thanks for the initial impression :)

Most importantly, enjoy your new phones :D

I asked UM if there were any demo units flowing around, but unfortunately there weren't any. Really wanted to hear what it is like! Does anyone have any experiences comparing the Merlin to the JH16 (or any JH), or any other high end CIEMs?

I'll tell ya what, Merlin is the best that I have ever heard, LSX5 trailing slightly behind it (just because universal Merlin fits a lot more comfortably)

@svyr had Merlin, and he's got JH16fp and JH13fp, ask him as he will be the best person to answer you

Are there any closed back (portable) headphones with a similar sound to the Merlins, but with more sub/mid bass (more sub than mid) emphasis?
Need something portable for the office, which can be quickly taken off and isolates good (no sound leakage) - I simply miss the overal Merlins sound on my HD380.

I make a review/comparison (in french) of UM Miracle/Merlin/3DD there : http://www.tellementnomade.org/review-unique-melody-3dd-merlin-miracle/

If you want, I can try (with my poor skill) to translate it smily_headphones1.gif
