They were $170 around Christmas 2011 on Amazon. I was broke so I couldn't afford it back then. I got more money right now plus I just got my income tax back but they went up to $250. I dont know whether the 598 just went on sale for Christmas or they are just in high demand right now. Should I wait till they go down in price again or should I just look for alternatives?

Will the Sennheiser 598 go down in price again?
Gear mentioned in this thread:
Prices for headphones usually fluctuate and rarely goes down(unless the headphone has been out and massed produced for a long time, i.e. HD 555/595, HD 580/600/650)

I'm happy I nabbed them during that period :). That being said, I've seen a few people selling them used for around that price point on here before if you don't mind used. At least you wouldn't need to burn in, and I would assume most people on here treat their headphones delicately. As for new I've seen them for $200 a few times though never as low as that $170 at xmas. If you have a store that stocks Sennheisers nearby you could try to talk them down on the price, that's what I did with my sr125s =/

This lead might be worth pursuing:

Call J & R Music and request the $170, they should give it to you.
I've seen them on amazon for that price twice in like the past 6 months so I would just wait and see :)

Business is going to be down for the next 3 months.
Business (manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers) need to bring in cash to pay bills and employees.
So stuff has to go on sale to move product.
So there is a chance the HD598s might go on sale at some retailers during this time.
The Sennheiser HD 558s are down to $164.
How lucky for you all who live in US, here in Indonesia, Sennheiser price range are as stable as a dead mountain, and with all those tax, shipping etc etc, the final price is sky high.
HD518 is about ~ $150 (with ratio 1 USD = 8900 IDR), HD558 ~ $215, HD598 ~$315. HD660? Its about $445 while HD650 is ~ $510. But all with 2 years warranty from the official distributor company. I don't know if the warranty is international or not, but I think its international.
oh well, anything imported is sky high here....

I think Sennheiser is international (unlike AKG, my k540s said on the box: "warranty not valid in US / Canada")... though that sucks that they're so high there. Imported sure, but not even made in Germany. Even the 600, 650 and now 700 are made in Ireland, better than China but still...

Sennheiser is now apparently enforcing their MAP (like grado does). I'm hoping the drop in sales causes them to stop enforcing it. :p
Bit wishful thinking, though.
