I don't really know what the different type of sound signatures are .
As for the genre i listen , i pretty much listen to everything from Rock to techno , from Heavy Metal to R&B/Hip hop

Sound sig is basically descriptors like bassy, analytical, fun, mid-centric, etc, describing portions of the frequency spectrum. For your genres, you'll probably like some boosted bass and treble (correct me if I'm wrong), giving you a v-shaped response curve, which is a pretty common coloration. That would be the M80s, FXT90s, TF10s, etc. I suggest you pick a couple models to do in-depth research on and then come back if you have more questions.

The problem about the TF10s and M80s is their price IMO
I was all up for getting either of the above ones but wanted to make sure that i wasn't making a decision hastily and wanted the best possible bang for the buck
If i had to choose a sound signature i would probably say fun not bassy because i don't like too much bass in my music

What about the Sony MDR-EX600 ?

Hi,

I am looking for an portable headphone that excell in jpop and jrock genres. Vocals are the most important factor for me.

My budget is around $200 or more. I will be playing it straight out from my cowon j3 without an amp.

I like a closed headphone that is quite small in size. I like headphones that are engaging with good soundstage, mids and treble. Also i am not much of a basshead.

Any help will be appreciated.

IIRC, there's some 50% off code on the Atrio website, and I think it still works. Go look through the deals threads for more details

Well, the on-ears might be able to deliver more bass impact just in terms of air moved, but in general, it's hard to recommend between two different types of headphone without taking into account usage preferences and such. I understand where you're coming from though. Have you had any other previous experiences with either on-ears or IEMs? In the meantime, I suggest you still check out those headphones and threads I mentioned.

Honestly, I can't tell you firsthand, since I've never personally handled any of them, but I'd say anything in this range should impress someone used to stock earbuds.

Glad you're enjoying them!

I guess I'll point above and say take a look at the MG7s (once again). Though again, I highly recommend you check out ljokerl and Clieos' comparative review threads, which are amazing resources. Within IEMs there's both a wide range of sound signatures and subtle distinctions between different models that it's a little hard to compare things without established reference points, etc. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Where can i find the cheapest m5 then ?

Well you said you wanted bass impact, and at the top-tier, unless they're super bassy, you shouldn't have too much of an issue with the mids. The EX600 is supposedly a little more analytical than the others you're considering, with less of that bass impact. For more specific comparisons, you could ask ljokerl and people on the appreciation threads, as there are quite a few people who have heard two or more of your candidates.

IEM or on-ear? Someone on the other thread suggested the DT1350s, and I think you might like the M80s as well, as they have a bigger soundstage, though the treble is laid back.

Sorry, the M5s are the ones with the MG7 drivers. It's the same thing. Check the deals thread, as I'm not entirely sure of the details of the deal.

Hi All,

From considering Ety HF3, MTPC, SE535 I actually went on to try the UE Triple Fi 10 and (to give on ears a chance) B&W P5.  I also found the UE SuperFi 5 vi that I lost months ago in a bush!

First the SuperFi 5 vi... these, although they look almost the same as the UE 600 that I'm replacing, sound quite different to me (yes they still worked after having been outside for some time); they seem more detailed, have a wider soundstage and richer bass (though not overdone) - I actually really like them still, but the cable has some problems (if I move in the wrong way, I get cut-outs in sound).  It may be their trip outside, but while they're working they seem much better than the dying UE600

The Triple Fi - I liked these but had issues with durability (in the space of a week).  The first pair, the removable cable housing came out of the earphone body on one side, so I got a replacement, which worked fine for 5 days, then the right phone started cutting half its output (seems like the cable broke, because if I held it, it gave full sound again).  I think I'd finally found a good fit on the last day I had them, and the sound seemed to have been improving throughout the time I had them; I liked the detail and texture of the bass (worked particularly well with cellos), and treble was quite good (the detail there was what seemed to be improving over time).  I just didn't want to get another replacement set because I figured that I'd continue having problems with durability.

B&W P5 - Really really don't like these (they're going to have to go back from whence they came).  Bass seemed to lack detail and was eclipsing everything else.  The treble seemed to be both harsh and lacking in detail at the same time.

I'm now thinking maybe UM3X RC or one of the EarSonics (v2 of SM2 or 3).  Can anyone comment or suggest any other options based on my experience above?

Thanks again

Hello all,

Im currently in the process of buying a pair of headphones to go with my phone (Sony Xperia S). I'm really after heavy bass, i listen mostly to EDM - but ofcourse i like clarity too. I have next to no experience in IEMs, but it sounds like a big soundstage is something that is important to me (but honestly i dont know if it is).

I have narrowed it down to:
Miles Davis Tributes (will cost me ~$350)
Sennheiser Ie80 (will cost me (~$300, seems they are cheaper in Sweden)
Atrio Mg7 (will cost me ~160$)

Is the enough difference in the sound as whole to motivate buying Miles Davis or Sennheisers?

Do you still have the TF10s? if so, you might just want to invest in a nice replacement cable that's more durable than the stock cable. One option might be the new Fiio cable, which I've heard is durable and of reasonable quality. Regarding the Earsonics, I've heard them described as having a very lush sound, which may be a little different coming from the TF10s. No idea about the Westones, but maybe check ljokerl's review thread if you haven't already.

I don't know that the MDTs will be quite the sound you're looking for, as they're not the bassiest of the Turbine Pros, and are also very expensive for the performance they give. Also, they've recently been discontinued, and they were selling them at a massive discount (they're out of stock now), but you could see if anyone has them in the for sale thread for cheap. The MG7s seem like a good bet, especially because I think there's a 50% off coupon on the Future Sonic website that brings the cost down to $99. Check the IEM deals thread for more info on that. The IE80s would be ideal for the soundstage issue, but I've never really heard soundstage as being terribly important as far as EDM goes, as it makes the music sound more distant. I don't think it's worth 2-3 times the price of the Atrios.

Thank you for your information! I think i just might for the Atrios. I just mailed their support about that coupon and it sounded as it still was green lights for the offer - but they said they don't deliver from their store to Sweden. They asked me if i know anyone in the US - guessing they wanna send the package there so they can send it to me! You guys know if there is any other alternatives to order to Sweden, like a remote postbox or something?

The TF10s are back with Amazon now, though I am almost tempted to give them another try - they are a lot cheaper than the others I'm looking at and I did like the sound a lot - one thing I was less keen on though was that they did seem to get a bit 'confused' with the busier parts of tracks - the resolution just disappeared - maybe that was the material rather than the headphones though.  They are big beasties too, so they weren't as comfortable as the 5vi / UE600 - something that does make me lean towards something else that my ears can fit more easily.

I'd happily consider alternate cables; I was a little hasty on the return and didn't try switching the cables over from one side to the other to see if the problem was in the connector or the cable itself; I had assumed it was the connector, but it could have been the cable.  I wasn't rough with them, but getting a good seal while wrestling with the memory wire over the few days could have trashed the cable - it just seems that it should last more than 5 days though!

Ive taken a look at both. Atrio's seem ok, but alot of people say they dont have a wide stage.

Again. I listen to rap/hip hop. But do have quite the collection of rock/classics. Prob 50/50. (Enjoy all genres, other than classical/jazz)
I wont be using an amp.
Ive also put aside $200 to buy a set of iems.

Im not familiar with all the terms, to me my skulls candies seemed fine lol. But ive gone through 3 in 5 months. Thats $90 wasted. I never played around with the eq or anything on them. I do like bass but not all the time, never turned it on the bass boost features and never missed out on that, so it seems like anything will be an upgrade. Are their any iems that are great all around? As in clear but have good bass incase i want it?

Sorry if im not technical, new to buying quality iem's. Never knew their were so many sets and each were specific. I usually picked out the cheapest at the local best buy. Looking to learn to make my music sound better haha. I do have a good set of regular headphones that i paid $400 for. They no doubt sound better than the skull candies, but arent portable.

Perhaps something like the FXT90s or TF10s then? v-shaped and still fun, but less blatantly bassy. I don't think you'll really notice the soundstage thing unless you have something to compare them to, and I don't know that it's all that necessary for rap/hip hop. More so for rock, but unless you're specifically interested, not that important IMO.
