Denon or audio technica

Hey guys,  I need some solid advice before I decide to make a purchase.  I am just getting into this stuff, so I am pretty ignorant about things.  Looking for my first set of headphones.  I was originally looking at the denon ah-d2000 (invest in a good pair of headphones that I wouldnt have to upgrade for quite some time)  However, I heard the dh2000 would benefit from an amp and you need complementary audio source/feed to maximize this headphone (high quality music files, etc).  I will just be listening to music from my IPOD/laptop (itunes/youtube, etc), so I was thinking the 2000s would be over the top for my kind of listening.  I am still open to the 2000s if someone can convince me, but now im deciding between denon ah-d1100 or audio technica ath m50 (trying to keep it under $200 for lower quality phones).  Which would you recommend?  I am also open to suggestions if you think another brand of headphones would be a better option.  Any help would be greatly appreciated

Edit: So the consensus here is pretty much with the denon 2000

The lowest price I have found on the denon ah-d2000 is around $280 (new).  So I'm pretty much not going to find a better headphone for this price correct?  I would be better off paying the extra $40 for the  denons over the audio technica a900x ?

I've tried both M50's and D1100's (and sold one of them) - if they are in similar price ranges, I would prefer the Denon. Better fit and sound for me. I'm assuming you are looking for a warmer sound?

What exactly do you mean by warmer?  I'm just looking for best sound quality overall i suppose, but I guess different people have different tastes on what sound is "better"?

Heya,

Denons are still going to be a great headphone for you. No amp needed, that is copy & paste mumbo-jumbo. All headphones benefit from lossless audio quality music, but a lot of headphones still sound great with slightly compressed music. The D2000 is going to be fine. It's excellent in all ways. By all means, if you want a comfortable headphone that is great for all genres that is closed back and easy to drive (no amp needed) then the D2000 is one of the better ways to go in the mid-tier bracket. I would avoid the D1100, it sounds really strange (very weird treble, not a good sound, very artificial). I would also avoid the M50, it's a mediocre headphone trapped in internet hype with a dinky sound stage. Other headphones I'd suggest you at least take a look at would be the AudioTechnica A900X, Shure SRH840, FischerAudio FA-003 (and Brainwavz HM5 clone), Beyer DT770, AKG K271 MKII and Ultrasone HFI 780 or PRO 750. If you're open to open-air headphones for at home use only, check out the AKG Q701, Sennheiser HD600, Beyer DT880 and AudioTechnica AD900.

If you want easy to drive, full size, full sound, closed back headphones. I would go D2000 or A900X.

Very best,

Another vote for the D2000, great headphones. I auditioned it before I bought my D7000, because I wanted the best sound possible. But given what you're after, the D2000 will suite you perfectly fine :)

Good luck

+1 for the denons. If you can haggle your dealer they are well worth it. Electronic Expo was selling them to people for $200+ when you phone them and haggle.

The Denons are great and while they can be used without an Amp they're even better with one.

Are you in the USA? If so I'm sure you can get them cheaper than $280. Otherwise I'm not sure :P

I'm kind of in a bind.  There's no real place where I can go to buy headphones or try them out (only a bestbuy which only has has beats and bose....)  That's why I come here to get some legit opinions.  Anyway I'm stuck with searching online for a good deal.

Lol haven't you read. Call J&R or Electronic expo. Talk to a human being. Haggle with them to get a good deal around $200+ dollars. Explain that other headfiers have gotten such deals. Mention about the open box deals.

Edit: Example in the works:

Hey guys, I just got directed to head-fi.org by google and I saw how some of the users had haggled j&r down and it really interested me. I just called J&R and placed an order for some Denon D2000 for $200 shipped! I used the same method of calling in and telling them i saw a price online for 180 shipped...and he worked with me to 200 shipped. AWESOME! I JUST created an account to tell you guys this.
