I dont hear to much of a difference really. They bass is great on the oppo. Id say the oppo maybe has a bit different sig but It could be all in my head. To he honest, Ive never heard these huge difference like what is claimed on headfi as long as the amps are the same class. I just put the burson up for sale locally for 600$ so should be a quick sale.

Sold my WA7 and missing it already :p

Had to hook up TH900's directly to my computers headphone port.

Just awful lol... the low end has been completely sucked out of them and every aspect of the sound has taken a huge hit.

Funny thing is, when I first got the TH900's a while back and hooked them directly to the computer (hadn't bought the WA7 yet), I thought they sounded pretty amazing through there :p

How does the oppo compare to the pathos aurium with the th900? I find the aurium to be an excellent match especially after changing from the stock tubes to some NOS Amperex PQs. Your post implies they are more similar than different.

Haven't been listening to too much music lately and have been doing more gaming so I thought a solid state amp would be better for my use as a tube amp is a bit overkill and not exactly made for using long periods of time. Absolutely loved the sound it gave me though when I did sit down for listening sessions.

Bass Heaven!  Shakira's La Tortura !  Worth alone the price of admission.

My Th-900's reign even over the HE-6 for when you want that big woofer sound.

Similar as long as they are the same class of amp. SS or tube etc. The aurium is an awesome amp, i'll never get rid of it. It certainly sounds different from the oppo, but the oppo sounds pretty similar if not identical to my other SS amps. I use my PC's Creative ZxR as the DAC for my aurium and love it to death. I'm running some GEC UK 6AS7G in it now. It's great.

BUT I use'd the Burson the most, but that will change to the oppo as the burson is for sale.

Thanks for the clarification.

Really impressed with my aurium as well especially when using my fostex hp-a8 as a dac. Have owned the burson, bryston bha-1 (run balanced), trafomatic head one and tried a bunch of other amps. While they all had their strengths, of the commercial amps I have heard the aurium is my pick of the bunch for matching with the th900. This is why I was curious about the oppo which I have never heard.

The only amp I have heard with better synergy than the aurium is an old Wyetech labs amp I currently use with a custom adapter box connected to the speaker outputs. Sounds great, but runs hot like hell since it use three 5u4g and ten (!) 6bx7gt tubes. Most of my time is spent with the aurium, but for those special occasions (and when it gets cold) I crank up the Wyetech.

I am using a Lawton modded th900 with Lawton pads and balanced cable so I am sure that is impacting my impressions. For single ended amps I use a balanced to single ended adapter.

My Lawton mod stuff will be here in a week or so and I've got a friend with a set of 900s, so I'll get to see A/B if the difference is worth it. I love doing that kind of stuff!

I love my TH 900 & yes it does provide sub-woofer like bass but the best quality bass I've heard from a HP is from the HE 6. My HE 6 is powered by a tube speaker integrated amp though (from the speaker taps). Majority headphone amp's will not give same quality & quantity of bass on HE 6  that a good speaker amp will IMHO.

on a side note , I see that you also own LCD XC. I heard it once for a short while & liked it but not as much as TH 900. Have hesitated buying it as I thought that having a TH 900 does not justify LCD XC purchase. But maybe I did not spend enough time with XC to fully appreciate its sound. How would you compare & justify owning them both ?

Punit, I'll weigh in with my $ 0.02. The XC has the best midrange that I've heard (I'm not including my stat HPs). The 900 is more the fun can with deep bass and lovely highs which are not sibilant but the midrange is comparatively lacking. IMO, the XCs are more natural sounding. I used to listen to them on the Mjolnir but recently I switched to the EC Zana Deux. I'm hooked on this combo. Something about tubes as well, I suppose.

I'll probably never know. I recabled the 900 for balanced.

you can always get a balanced to SE adapter :confused_face_2:
