So I accidentally turned my leather pads a bit and don't know what position they were in originally :p

Pretty sure the stitch line is supposed to line up with the bolt on each side of the cup, right?

What you could do if you want to experiment with different sound signatures is try different XLR or RCA cables between your dac and amp

Soooooo, I got my TH900's today and all I can say is wow! I've read the bass was good but they bass isn't just good, it's crazy good! The phones actually vibrate me head a tiny little bit! I've been back and forthing between my hd800's and the 900's and I'm finally satisfied. I've got a good set of cans for every mood I'm in! I still can't get over how awesome the bass it! Nice and clear ( although I'd have to say the 800's are a bit more transparent) but thats not a knock against the 900's, thats just what they do best.

I tried some dance, techno, metal, classical, the 900's do everything well! Running them through my Burson 160D and still waiting on my oppo for delivery.

I also think it's cool that I bought some alpha dogs because I wanted a closed phone, they were ok, I just didn't get a sense of WOW ever with them. I've read people praising their bass..... I can only laugh to myself now, they really haven't heard the 900's because they blow them away and thats putting it lightly.

In the end, I'm super happy and loved the 900's from the first note that they played. Simply Awesome! I think I'm gonna sell my grado ps1000's now, I've always like my 800's better and can see 50/50 split with the 900's and HD800's for fun!

Congratulations !, you got it pretty quick, mine took about 3 weeks form the day I ordered.

How old is your grado ? I audition it quiet few times at Bay Bloor Radio and I liked it, not as much as HD800 but it's a nice headphone.

grados are about a year old. have about 100 hours on them. I've got a buyer lined up already and will be close to what I paid for the 900's, so it's a win win!!

I'm looking forward to the oppo, hoping it gets here tomorrow! I'll get decent enough $ back from the burson if I sell it.

Hey guys,

I'm planning to purchase a TH900 in the coming months. I would also like a small AMP + DAC to go with it (I will be using it with a laptop). I would need the following specs:

1. Solid State

2. USB connection

3. AMP + DAC preferably, unless someone says an amp alone makes more of a difference

4. around $500-800 ish

Obviously I would prefer need a mobile, portable amp (for the battery benefits), BUT I will consider a desktop amp too.

I've narrowed down the choices to:

HeadAmp Pico USB DAC/AMP

- JDS Labs O2+ODAC combo

- Sony PHA 2

- iBasso D2/D12/D42? (I have no idea which one is best)

Centrance HiFi-M8

Leckerton Audio UHA760

- Fostex HP-A8C

Which one of these would be best to drive the Fostex TH900? Or is there another amp in this category that I have blatantly overlooked?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I sold all my portable gears, why ? because IMO any portable gears doesn't even match full size desktop. Even if you get the top line like SR71b, ALO MK3, with balanced CLAS -db, doesn't even come close, not even half.  Trust me, on this.

For the desktop amp/dac, I only had Burson HA160DS so I cannot tell you much, I auditioned Peachtree, Marrantz (with taps), Asus One, etc all doesn't match the synergy that Burson gives.

I think Peachtree was the worst amp in my experience.

If you really want a portable go with Hugo, :)

Go with

  • Fostex HP-A8C
  • Lynx Hilo
  • Yulong DA8
  • Mytek 192 DSD DAC
  • Oppo HA1 (I really don't know about this amp/dac, so cannot tell you)

I am going to order Lynx Hilo or Opps HA1 next month or so.

The Mytek is a bit of an acquired taste, imho. Great detail, black background and more than enough power for the TH900, but the soundstage is a bit flat and the signature is rather coin-in-mouth. It's good as a DAC paired with a wet tube amp, but as a standalone unit I think there are better options out there at that price point.

 Care to elaborate ?

You mean the better options at that price point? Well, there are many. The Fostex HP-A8 is better with the TH900, to my ears. Some say it's even better now with the newest firmware. The Burson Conductor with PCM1793 DAC and CM6631A USB Module is also a very good all-in-one pairing (ditto the Conductor SL or older HA-160D), though the presentation might be too bottom-heavy for some people. If you're after musicality rather than ultimate resolution and don't need 24/192 or DSD, I reckon you could do well with a modest USB-powered DAC like the Halide coupled with a DIY opamp-tube hybrid amp like the Project Starlight. Not exactly all-in-one, but you only need one power-socket.

I didn't say the Mytek was bad, btw. It's just got a certain signature that you'll either love or loathe. For my tastes it's a bit too metallic (just a bit, not terrible like the tetanus induced by Benchmark DACs), but others might like it. Best to try for yourself.

So this is my second day with these bad boys.  They really shine with the Burson Conductor.  I've A/B'd with all my other phones (HE-500, HD-600, T1, HD-800) and these are standing up to the competition.  I'd like to give myself a chance to fully acclimate before drawing any real conclusions because I know I'm still in the honeymoon (read: new toy) phase.

This might have been discussed earlier in the thread, but are the th900s known to have any real (not psycho-acoustic) burn in period?  What's the prevailing thought on this?
