Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread - Page 416

The ef6 is the designed partner amp for the he6 as is the hp a8 for the th900. Not to down play potential and realize the marketing end but I figure the companies that build the phones know a thing how to power these things and get maximum capability. I will go and read, as I'm not in geographic locals to sample across platforms or even test match ups. Was just curious down the road how comparable my dac was on other cans. Cheers.

I soon will be able to compare the EF-6 to the FirstWatt F5 (clone).

We shall see...

Darryl had the EF-6 together with the F1J and there was apparently no comparison (in a technical standpoint, that is).

EF-6 compares well (favorably) to the GS-X mkII and Master-8.

Now the Master 9 is out with a better sound overall (as per Macrog impression - who had the chance to hear/own all 3 Master 9, Phoenix and Master 5/6/8).

The EF-6 is great, no doubt, but I'm left wanting for a better imaging and a out of the head experience (which Audio-gd never failed to give me).

The NFB-27 > SA-31 > HE-5LE (Alpha Pads) was the best imaging I've heard (perfect focus) so far. And the best sound period, back when it worked without the issues I've had ever since...

On a side note: I got my LCD-X back yesterday.

It is worse in terms of imaging for me: the depth (and overall focus) is better with the HE-6 and it sounds so fluid and airy by comparison... Also, I stand by my opinion that the LCD-X has an emphasis of 'Sssss' and 'Tttttt' that is not pleasant (like the Alpha Dogs) to these ears.

The HE-6 has more presence, no sibilance, more airy and - for me at least; I know some disagree - a better defined and more natural bass response.

The HE-5LE is one step below in every area but has a tonality to die for and better focus. Tough world...

Reading those threads is highly recommended.

I really need to try the TH900 sometime...

Then we should arrange a meet ;)

Before the twins I never knew how much I appreciated mono sound.

Received my TH900's today really amazing looking cans.

Compared to my LCD-2's they are a completely different animal. Much more upfront presentation where the LCD's sound like you are 30 rows back from the music. The TH900's are in your face but with still amazing soundstage. The LCD's always had a dark veil to them while the TH900's really clean up the entire presentation. Ohh and the speed these things attack like a pack of killer bees. I would switch back the LCD's and felt like they would muddy the detail especially on heavy rock stuff. The Fostex sound like they operate on another speed somewhat similar to a can like the T1's. Everyone says the LCD's have great bass but the 900's are geared more towards the sub bass but not bloated like the old Denon's (I have the D5000's as well). The bass hits and sustains but the accuracy is incredible, for electronic or r&b this is a great match.  Mids do not sound recessed to me like I've heard in some other descriptions. The highs can be a little bright especially coming from something like the LCD's but it was never harsh and that's with no burn in. From jazz to edm I really couldn't find a genre that didn't sound very good with these headphones.

So far very happy with the TH900's. Should be interesting to see how they sound after some burn in

They just get better still only say 15-20 hours, amazing. Course my dac is also burning in, enjoy.

Has anyone tried the Lawton Angle pads on their TH900's?

I've got mine today too and am curious about these as well. Much more comfortable than the LCD2s but I think the ear pads could use another 1/4 inch or so of padding which those seem to provide.

I just put some angled Lawton's on my TH-900's.....I was thinking of selling my 900's but am now re-thinking it.....it's early but they surely seem more comfortable.....the sound seems a little fuller too......
