sweet pick up man.

2 months back or so the Fostex came to my favorite headphone shop that I go to so often. At first listen the bass was out of control and highs were destroying my ears but I went there again yesterday and they sounded pretty sweet. But some drawbacks were still there. Although I didn't dismiss these as weird Fostex engineering, I thought some things were very strange. Some sound are just not there. I listen to Daft Punk's Homework and put it side by side with my HD650 and had an hour of listen with that album. I changed the album with Adele's 21. The sound was just not there. It's literally missing. Bass is nice and tight but it decays too fast. Highs are quirky and fun but not there sometimes. Overall this is a fun headphone but seems like I don't want to buy it for $1430 from amazon.

Hey DG, I kinda miss seeing all those TOTL headphones on your sig. :(

How come you didn't keep any of the Audez'es?

just bought mine, canada $, christmas sale at 10% off 1375$ Hpa8 same price, worth every penny to me. I like these forums, everyone looking for perfection, every can seems different. evryones tatses are different as well. My choices were ultrasone, grado,  Sennheiser, decided on fostex for the bass and dac matchup. I figure fostex would get that right.

I think you made the right choice.  I got them back in November and am thrilled with everything about them.

not as good alrounder, i miss lcd-3 and its equally as good as He-6 i think, with gsx mk2, its endgame for sure, as good as it gets. but for now, i need an all rounder since i dont have a ton of flagships around and i love how he-6 does vocals and electronic music, so its my choice. i also like the he-6 bass presentation.

the first he-6 i had seemed almost like t1, better at bass and transparency, but inferior in other qualities, mostly equally harsh treble at times, worse with poor recordings, and a more recessed midrange.

the newer he-6 i have now is very near perfect, neutral with deep strong bass, clean smooth midrange and beautiful treble, detailed and pretty much better in every way from the old one, this one is very "sr-009" like. just has a ton of clarity. and impressive how it works with EVERY genre, rap, electronic, vocals, rock, like its perfect. it rocks as good as a T1 or a Grado, its equally good for audiophile recordings and classical like hd 800, and its just as great at bass as a Th-900 or LCD-3.

Doing some homework on he 6, specs look impressive and your impressions positive, seems to need some power, the ef6 dac supplies 5 w per at 50 ohms my hp a8 does 700 mw at 35 so thats 7 w conversion. Not that I'm thinking of adding anytime soon but, would my dac power those cans properly.

I should never have asked. Sounds very end-game the way you describe it.

So HE-6 with GSX-Mk2 eh? dammit...gotta do some research.

not with gsx mk2, with gsx mk2 as the amp, it sounds great still, but you might not notice a huge improvement from he-500, the he-500 sounds incredibly good out of gsx mk2 and scales very high.

using the Forte 1A speaker amp, its 50WPC class A nelson pass design. its about as good as the Threshold T50 which is another nice speaker amp, they are older amps though and have to be brought used. theres first watt amps which are similar and im sure if these sound good, those would sound amazing.

the gsx mk2 serves as my pre-amp and well, its a wire-with-gain pre-amp doesn't get in the way of the music whatsoever.

Well to answer my own question, according to headfonia, the a8 has plenty of power to run even he6, quite a raving review of the dac in general. Good to know for some of us newbies out there. Granted have a few hundred hours to burn in the fostex first.

Headphonia are not to be trusted when it comes to statements about what can drive the HE-6. They're basically a laughing stock on this issue in the HE-6 amps thread.

There are basically two kinds of people when it comes to the HE-6; those who have heard it well driven (the likes of HappyCamper, Prepoman and others from the HE-6 thread who have auditioned it on MANY systems), and those who have not. Sadly most of the latter group believe they are in the former group, as they think attaining adequate volume equates with the HE-6 being well driven, which it does not.

You had to do this...sigh !

Thanks nz for helping the new kid who is just learning. No worries, no additions coming I did notice the power demand of the he6, so I guess my question to the ether out here is the hp a8 able to power the he6 to its effective use? The ef6 there flagship amp seems comparable, otherwise I will also go back and read threads and learn up a bit.

I've not heard the EF6, but it's clear from the HE-6 threads that it isn't that highly rated any longer - the HE-6 can scale higher.

Reading those threads is highly recommended.

I really need to try the TH900 sometime...
