The TH900 is a great headphone.  It is not my intent to dissuade!

also, I didn't mean to "thumbs up" this post as a way to suggest that you should be dissuaded by my review.  i thought i was clicking on unspool's post above :)

Just read this for the first time. Absolutely incredible review. Well written and thought out. I also love that you did not use fabricated words like 'warmness'. Great work and I cannot wait to get a pair of these Beautiful Cans.

See? That's exactly the problem, and you'd be doing yourself a disservice for skipping the Fostex just because of one person's opinion (when there are dozens here who have said how much they love them).

I'm doing a level-playing-field comparison with the TH900 and the 009 this weekend with MorbidToaster. As most say, I think I will find them complimentary with each having strong features. But, I will be taking notes. Will be using same source, and LF + TH900 and LL + 009.

Edit: I suppose a "level-playing-field" might be argued that we should use comparably expensive chains, not comparable equipment in the chain leading up to the phones.

Perhaps one should delve further into the specific reasons why people like them or don't like them. And then calibrate one's own tastes, preferences, and criteria accordingly. If one reads carefully, there is not much inconsistency (or any at all) between Muppetface's or David's observations of specific qualities of the TH900. However, their personal preferences are quite different.

I am not nearly as far along in the high-end arena as some around here. Just started in the grand scheme of things. But the more I explore, the more I realize that alot of the stuff in the very high end is just different sounding - different flavors of sound, not necessarily better. But I can see how things get labeled as "better" when a certain piece of gear aligns more with one's personal preferences.

Magick Man seemed to miss when I mentioned that after looking at Dave's review of this headphone I WANT TO TRY IT EVEN MORE!!!! But someone came and said the opposite and... MM didn't miss that comment. LOL

Exactly.

This is why a I love reading impressions from a host of people on this site and one of the reasons I joined! I love when people like MF, who also has a huge collection of headphones, write impressions on their new buys, etc. because even though we probably don't have the same taste, at least I get an objective view and comparisons to other headphones I might like (or not!).

I guess the main thing that people are looking at is the POSITION of 'X' headphone on Dave's list but it seems they are NOT reading the contents of the reviews which is really the important thing! So just because the TH900s (or X headphones) are not in Dave's Top 10, they're going to throw a fit.

Anyway... one of these days I'll have these!!!!

(in the meantime, I'll stick in the mid-fi realm for a bit!!! ;-))

No need to talk about me in the third person, I'm right here.

My dear fellow, I've not "thrown a fit". I distinctly remember 3 fits I've had in my adult life (4 if you count my idiot cousin driving a roofing nail into my back with a nail gun), and none had anything to do with a forum discussion.

I read the contents of the reviews, and you are correct, they don't match the rankings. Though I'm not sure I'd put the TH900 in the top 10, it would be close. Likely swapping the TH900 and the T1, remove the dreadful ED10 entirely, and put the Koss ESP/950 in its place.

TH900 Decision Guide. I'm still stuck at the "Are you willing to pay nearly $2k" diamond.

Oh, I wasn't referring to you or anyone in particular, just members on the boards (i.e. when I said: "they" ;-)), especially on the original review thread.

Exactly.

His thoughts about the strengths and weaknesses actually match what a lot of you owners have mentioned of these gems!

LOL!!! Loved it!

And yep... that's my main "issue" I guess. I have the Denon D5000s which I like a lot (but haven't used in a while) and was just thinking that this might be my step to "high-fi"... unless I go the Stax route. But living where I live, not sure if I want an electro...

Regardless of personal preferences, it's good to see those headphones in a ranking system.

Not to be a nittpicker gelocks,  however,I must comment.  You own the Sig Pro and are eagerly awaiting the DJ , you still consider yourself in the realm of mid-fi?

Please oh please dont tell me you consider the Sig Pro mid fi?

Sorry to derail,  Fanboi rant overbiggrin.gif

I'll have an ECBA I plan on using with them whenever the current batch is shipped out.  I have a WA22 and a Lyr as well, but nothing about WA22 -> TH900 struck me as being better than my SS setup the first few times I compared them, so it mostly goes unused.  The thought of plugging them into a Lyr scares the hell out of me.
